      Current state of vpsBoard   02/04/2017

      Dear vpsBoard members and guests:

Over the last year or two vpsBoard activity and traffic has dwindled. I have had a change of career and interests, and as such am no longer an active member of the web hosting industry.

Due to time constraints and new interests I no longer wish to continue to maintain vpsBoard. The web site will remain only as an archive to preserve and showcase some of the great material, guides, and industry news that has been generated by members, some of which I remain in contact to this very day and now regard as personal friends.

I want to thank all of our members who helped make vpsBoard the fastest growing industry forum. In it's prime it was an active and ripe source of activity, news, guides and just general off-topic banter and fun.

I wish all members and guests the very best, whether it be with your business or your personal projects.

  1. Which KVM hosts support custom ISOs?

Most KVM providers should allow custom ISO uploads as long as its supported and it doesn't affect the nodes in anyway that they are hosted on. If an images is not in the list just open a support request and I am sure they would upload it for you.
  2. How does a NAT VPS work?

What is so hard with this? If you are setting up NAT using a VPS its very easy to do depending on what appliance or application you want to use to setup the NAT interface for your VPS. For a free solution that is easy for beginners look at untangled has a gui interface as well as ssh console for the more advance users. You can use that os to setup NAT with dhcp servers handing out private ips to your VPS.
  3. Home security systems?

If you want a camera system that records and also have network ability we went with a few 4 Channel 720P PoE NVR System with 1TB Hard Drive or if you want get the 8 channel. Works great for night vision and has a app for the phones as well so you can see live video and take snapshots. POE systems are easier to install and managed 1 cat5 cable to each camera.
  4. WHMCS to double their price of owned licenses.

Yes this is also true but the higher ups want a raise so they need to hike up prices. :D
  5. WHMCS to double their price of owned licenses.

I welcome the increase as this will help with the cost of developers and new features that everyone is always asking for. You have to spend money to make money folks those that complain are just summer hosts and the price increase will just help cut down on those.
  6. Good news for clients and companies that wanted the protection.
  7. Server and domain monitoring tool I made

Looks good, how far back can you look at the stats?
  8. Hivelocity/Sparknode: Recommended?

Seems like some of the questions should of been asked before any orders were placed. I know on the main HV site that 3 months is required for cpanel management if you want it so I wouldn't see why they wouldn't offer the same thing on there sparknode site. might of just been miss communication with the sales and site. Were the issues resolved?
  9. We use both ipv6 and ipv4 with the following providers XO, Level 3, TWTC, GTT, NTT, Cogent, Comcast and Global Crossing. ipv6 is dhcp setup to your server we allow you to choose which ipv6 resolvers you want to use we let our clients know of Google Public DNS IPv6 addresses which are as follows:2001:4860:4860::8888 & 2001:4860:4860::8844. We still have some finishing work to do on our switch out of our previous billing system. But all in all we have ipv4 and ipv6 for dedicated server, shared hosting, VPS and Private Cloud systems. IPV6 is the way as ipv4 is hard to get from arin.
  10. You're all doing it wrong.

Even with in house developers you always have rogue employees or developers that can cause issues with security. Best way to lock down the system is with the network you know what ips need to access what data all else should be denied and the issue is resolved. Admin areas, billing portals, servers in general if you lock down the network, ie transparent filters, firewall, ACL, software programs that try to communicate will not be able to, unless allowed. One security issue is resolved with this method. Having developers to add your own skins or portal on top of whmcs or another control panel using an API is what some companies do to save money on developer cost and pci compliance licenses, if you are attempting to build your own billing portal from the ground up this can get very expensive. Everyone is becoming a VPS host, LOL I love some of the tickets and responses I see from shared hosting providers also. Best piece of advice I can give to anyone wanting to become a host regardless if its VPS hosting or some other kind of hosting. Learn the systems from the ground up. Break the system as many ways before making it live so you know what will happen. Always create backups of anything you want to keep. If your drive crashes or your site is hacked and you didn't setup backups guess what? Must not of been important. Always create a backup of a file or system before making changes and most important of all. If your not sure use Google or another search engine and do some research on it and keep documentation on it before committing to the changes you are attempting. Besides that the article is well written and I wish the best to any and all hosts.
  11. FBI Seeks To Legally Hack You If You're Connected To TOR or a VPN

They try to spy on us now as it is they just want to make sure its legit when going to court. USA is losing more rights everyday next they will require software on every system that can watch everything your doing. O wait windows is already out
  12. How do you manage your clients VPS? (Managed Providers)

No there is a system in place that will watch all the servers and if the clients are managed an agent is placed on all the servers to report back any issues.
  13. vpsBoard Top Providers of 2014 voting.

Do not use the others so can't vote on them  guess the votes only goes for the ones that advertise the most. LOL Will see how many are around in a few years.
  14. All of North Korea's internet is out.

Too funny don't they realize that the world doesn't like idiots. They should keep hitting them for the rest of next year put them back to the stone age.
  15. 1 gigabit per second internet connection?

More and more devices in the home are using up the bandwidth 1G is normal in some areas but need to expand. Think about all the devices in the world that are getting connected to the internet. I see more and more clients getting 10G links to dedicated servers. If you build it they will come =D I am waiting on my 1G home speeds think about 5 to 10 years down the road the infrastructural needs to get build now to sustain the masses.
