      Current state of vpsBoard   02/04/2017

      Dear vpsBoard members and guests:

Over the last year or two vpsBoard activity and traffic has dwindled. I have had a change of career and interests, and as such am no longer an active member of the web hosting industry.

Due to time constraints and new interests I no longer wish to continue to maintain vpsBoard. The web site will remain only as an archive to preserve and showcase some of the great material, guides, and industry news that has been generated by members, some of which I remain in contact to this very day and now regard as personal friends.

I want to thank all of our members who helped make vpsBoard the fastest growing industry forum. In it's prime it was an active and ripe source of activity, news, guides and just general off-topic banter and fun.

I wish all members and guests the very best, whether it be with your business or your personal projects.

      -MannDude

  1. I have no clue if this is the proper place to post this, but I shall try! I'm looking for the best self-hosted project management system. (web based) Any experiences so I don't have to go through the trial and error stage? XD
  2. Hi there guys, I work in a hosting software developing company ISPsystem, headquartered in Russia, and VMmanager is one of our main solutions. It has been launched in 2004 and has been in active development and support since. The solution has great popularity on our local markets (like Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, etc). But we want to extend its popularity worldwide and are now collecting feedback. VMmanager is offered in a number of different languages. KVM and OVZ are both supported, along with local and network storages, different OS templates, etc. Runs on CentOS 6, 7 and Debian 7. A detailed description and manuals are on wiki here and there is also a online demo of VMmanager in case you want to take a look. Compared to SolusVM VMmanager’s most interesting features are: Supported formats for disk image files are lvm, qcow and raw. While SolusVM has only LVM, and that requires specific disk mapping. Migration between nodes, as well as between clusters. VMmanager lets you use KVM virtualization having only one license, while when using SolusVM you need to buy an additional license for each new node. Most operations (like installation of new nodes) are available directly from VMmanager, while SolusVM requires a more extensive use of the console. A lot of hints and tips designed to help new users who are not yet familiar with VMmanager A more affordable price, in comparison, could be important for some users. Recently we launched a free version of the VMmanager, to enable more people worldwide to try it and to collect more feedback on it, regarding functionality, usability, etc. So pretty much want to make sure that it does all it needs to, and is responsive to your needs. The edition allows managing 2 VMs and 16 GB RAM. Would be happy to answer any questions on here, and would really appreciate any feedback! Pavel Kaprovskii, Team ISPsystem P.S. I can say that it was a real pleasure to find vpsBoard with such a strong and live community. And since I’m a new guy here, and don’t want to be considered as a spammer I have asked MannDude if it's appropriate or not. He gave his agreement.
  3. Server management system

As the amount of virtual servers I own increased, I had trouble keeping track of them, what their purpose was and all their details (cost, memory, etc.). I used to keep an excel spreadsheet, but it wasn't able to do a lot of what I wanted. Over the week or so, I have been working on a server management system and I just wanted to showcase where it is at here. Initially, it started pretty basic with just keeping track of servers and their various details, but now it sports a few more features: Ping checking with history, email notifications and status badges Solus VM integration Rather than typing data in yourself, this system can pull in all of the data the SolusVM API makes available Pull all IP address from solus Pull HDD space from solus Pull RAM amount from solus Direct implementation of solus page General Management Servers can have a purpose Servers show the time left with a progress bar It is built on Django and uses Bootstrap V3. I posted some screenshots to give you a better example of what it is all about: Homepage / Server List Specific servers Server Details Server Specs Server uptime Server purpose Server SolusVM integration (pulls data from SolusVM) Server Admin The images below are split because the page was too tall for one screenshot. Both the email notifications when the server goes down or up Currently, the source is hosted in a private repository (Bitbucket) but if people want, I can upload it to Github. The code is now on Github! This is still way before any type of formal versioned release. Since this uses the Django framework, it is harder to deploy than a simple PHP script. If I release it on Github, I will post installation instructions for Debian and Ubuntu systems. Debian and Ubuntu instructions are now online! The docs are at https://server-listing.readthedocs.org Here is the link to the git repository: https://github.com/ServerListing/Server_Listing
  4. Announcement: Levarion serves as a base panel for a set of different modules: - Billing / Support - VPS - Cloud - Web Hosting - Monitoring - Dedicated Hosting - DNS - Many more - Will have an API to enable adding 3rd party modules The Billing, VPS and Dedicated Module will be built in-house as a replacement for some more commonly used panels around here. We will be considering building other modules in-house or partnering with vendors. Primary Features: - Java and MongoDB based. Clustering supported out of the box. No it does not hog memory. Verified and tested. Works on OpenVZ. Will be using a modified OpenJDK. - WHMCS / HostBill integration - cPanel integration - SmartOS based KVM - data deduplication (saves space), better resource management (bursting, throttling io/cpu, etc), fast provisioning, etc... - Debian / Ubuntu / CentOS OpenVZ - LXC (this will be primary) - Migration scripts (SolusVM, etc) - Proper support with proper SLAs - Theme and customization support - Proper IPv6 support - Proper GUI installer and error handling - Source code available on certain plans with NDA - Two factor auth Currently the VPS module will be done first with more to come. Screenshots and more information will follow. Beta will also follow. Pricing for VPS portion: $10/month per slave (slaves will not run a web server, but a direct network connection to the master) If any provider wishes to sign up as a partner to help with specs, gain access to early features, better pricing etc, please contact. Note: this didn't pop up as a result of the recent incidents. Has been in the planning for over a month.
  5. Now that alternatives to SolusVM are both coming onto the market and being developed in-house providers are starting to make the migration. This also gives us access to a whole new world of opportunities including better integration into your environment. My question to all other providers are pretty simple. What features are you especially interested in that available panels are lacking? This is inclusive of things expanding away from virtualization, such as network and storage integration. Following the integration theme: billing integration. WHMCS is showing its true colors with the recent rash of publicized vulnerabilities. BuyVM is making the switch to a billing system integrated into their management panel - are other providers looking to do the same? Network integration. We get the option to do centralized usage tracking, complex routing and firewalling, etc. What are your networks like? What sort of alternative resource models are you interested in? Most available systems use resource templates - is there any interest in offering pooled resource plans? What about "cloud-like" billing (by the <insert-time-period>)? What do your clients request that isn't available in your current systems? Now I'm sure many of you are interested in keeping your ideas and implementations to yourselves, but my purpose here is to try and idealize the demands of the general provider community. If we can come together and build a feature set filling the needs of the community dealing with crud like SolusVM and WHMCS can finally be a thing of the past. Our customers should expect secure and reliable facilities from their providers, and with poorly implemented closed systems like these we can't guarantee that to our customers.

  7. Project Management System

So, out of curiosity what's your preferred Project Management System? Team management, work management, etc.
  8. ENERGY!

Out of curiosity, what do you all drink or do to wake up or help keep you up if you have a long day or week? I used to be a fan of energy drinks, but I've stopped with them from awhile back, and have since become a fan of coffee and the kickstart drinks by mtn dew. The kickstart drinks actually are not too bad and seem to work. Coffee wise, I like to keep some starbucks on hand.
