      Current state of vpsBoard   02/04/2017

      Dear vpsBoard members and guests:

Over the last year or two vpsBoard activity and traffic has dwindled. I have had a change of career and interests, and as such am no longer an active member of the web hosting industry.

Due to time constraints and new interests I no longer wish to continue to maintain vpsBoard. The web site will remain only as an archive to preserve and showcase some of the great material, guides, and industry news that has been generated by members, some of which I remain in contact to this very day and now regard as personal friends.

I want to thank all of our members who helped make vpsBoard the fastest growing industry forum. In it's prime it was an active and ripe source of activity, news, guides and just general off-topic banter and fun.

I wish all members and guests the very best, whether it be with your business or your personal projects.

      -MannDude

  3. The U.S. Supreme Court quietly OK'd a rule change last Thursday that will allow the government to obtain a warrant and remotely hack into ANY computer or smartphone that has anonymity software installed on it (VPN, Tor browser, etc) and the devices of anyone who has tried to conceal their location for privacy reasons (e.g. if you turn off the location data for smartphone apps for privacy reasons your phone can be searched under these new rules) . Congress still has to approve it, but... the proposed rule change: http://www.supremecourt.gov/orders/courtorders/frcr16_8mad.pdf EFF article: https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2016/04/rule-41-little-known-committee-proposes-grant-new-hacking-powers-government
  4. Set up a proxy with a VPS

Holah I would like to set up a proxy or vpn (not sure which is which there) What i want to do is that from my desktop , it can switch my IP to use ones that i have allocated to that VPS , something that hides my IP but uses one of the VPS . Something that works the same as the side http://hide.me or private tunnel The main reason for doing this for those who will (obviously) ask , my internet provider does not offer dedicated IP's and i want when i'm managing my servers to be able to manage from my IP address only .. Does anyone have ideas how to accomplish this ?
  5. I made a tool that allows admins see how likely an IP address is a proxy/VPN IP. The system returns a probabilistic value of how likely an IP address is a proxy / VPN. This should help forum admins, online shops, etc. If you have problems with people bypassing bans / trolls / fraud prevention, this tool should be useful. I hear that maxmind doesn't classify VPNs / proxies as high risk so this might be useful as another layer of detection. The proxy check system uses: 2 static files (manually updated) 1 dynamic file 6 unique dynamic checks 1 cached IPs file (to reduce the number of dynamic check queries) Here's the full documentation / readme - http://check.getipaddr.net/ The proxy check system has served 175k unique IP lookups in the past ~2 months, and the system is out of the development stage.

  9. Hey vpsBoard :), So I'm working alongside a company at the moment who are trying to gauge what sort of interest there would be in this plug & play VPN device. The process is fairly simple. You plug the device into your router using an ethernet cable, and a power source (can be powered via micro-USB), and then simply connect your devices to the SSID of the plug & play device, and you're good to go. Some small initial setup may be required, however it'd be extremely simple and wouldn't require any serious level of expertise. This is aimed to be easy enough to be configured by non-technical users. This is roughly what the device will look like: It's looking like the pricing will be around the $70 mark, which will include one years worth of VPN service. After this time, you'd have the choice of whether or not to renew your VPN service. Is this something you'd be interested in? If so, are there any suggestions you'd like to be considered? If you're not interested, is there anything specific that puts you off? I'll hopefully have more news regarding this over the next couple of months. Thanks, Liam
  10. In late November 2014 Dragana Damjanovic notified OpenVPN developers of a critical denial of service security vulnerability (CVE-2014-8104). The vulnerability allows a tls-authenticated client to crash the server by sending a too-short control channel packet to the server. In other words this vulnerability is denial of service only. A fixed version of OpenVPN (2.3.6) was released 1st Dec 2014 at around 18:00 UTC. The fix was also backported to the OpenVPN 2.2 branch and released in OpenVPN 2.2.3, a source-only release. An OpenVPN server can be easily exploited (crashed) using this vulnerability by an authenticated client How to fix? https://community.openvpn.net/openvpn/wiki/SecurityAnnouncement-97597e732b
  11. SSHuttle

Anyone here using SSHuttle? Consider it the poor mans VPN, in fact, I've never had a 'proper' VPN. Used to just tunnel traffic via SSH through a VPS, but that got messy and there had to be a better way... SSHuttle! https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle Installing on your Linux desktop at home is as simple as: sudo apt-get install sshuttle -y Followed by: sshuttle --dns -vvr [USER]@[IP-ADDRESS]:[SSH Port] 0/0 Here is the readme if you need help: https://github.com/apenwarr/sshuttle/blob/master/README.md Happy browsing!
  12. Hey vpsBoard, As some of you are aware, I started offering some dedicated IP VPN's over at VPN.SH that ended up having issues getting launched. The demand was fairly high, and whilst there are some ongoing issues at VPN.SH, I took the plunge to move the dedicated IP's to a fresh service: FixedRoute. With FixedRoute, you'll get a dedicated IP VPN in either New York City or Seattle. We currently have two data options: 500GB/month and 1500GB/month. These are OpenVPN only, however we bundle the wonderful Viscosity software with the service (which is usually $10 just to get a license!) for free. This is available on both Windows and Mac, and standard OpenVPN clients can be used on Linux, iOS and Android. So upon our launch we're offering 70% off all of our packages with the discount code: LAUNCH70. This means you can get a dedicated IP VPN from just $1.50/month. Here's a full list of packages with the discount code: Seattle 500GB/month - $1.50/month - Order Link Seattle 1500GB/month - $3/month - Order Link New York City 500GB/month - $1.50/month - Order Link New York City 15000GB/month - $3/month - Order Link So far we've had great feedback from our clients, and those who transferred from their dedicated IP packages at VPN.SH are enjoying the experience thus far. We look forward to making a fresh start with this service, whilst continuing to make progress with VPN.SH. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a PM or an email at [email protected] Thanks and enjoy! ----- Visit our Website Follow us on Twitter Like us on Facebook ------ NOTE: It would be much appreciated if discussions about VPN.SH can remain in threads regarding VPN.SH. I'm more than happy to discuss what's happening with VPN.SH in the relevant topics.

So... I'm doing a bit of travelling again! I'm reporting live from an open WiFi access point in a hotel room! Woo hoo! I'm currently using a VPN and all that jazz at the moment to encrypt my traffic and hopefully not have anyone sniffing my packets, but what else is there to protecting your important credentials?

  15. Hello guys. Say if there is a standard PPTP installation on a VPS, and give clients connecting though PPTP VPN proxy access to the Internet. The local ip range for VPN clients are 192.168.1.0/24, with gateway at 192.168.1.1. VPN operates on ppp0. I wish to grant all clients connected to VPN access to local network (e.g. applications running on 127.0.0.1). I only have a rough idea about implementing NAT. Would someone give some precise instruction on how to accomplish that? Thanks.
  16. Hello guys, I have created a fully automated ("one-click") IPsec/L2TP VPN install script for Ubuntu 12.04. My script was inspired by and is based on the work of Thomas Sarlandie (original post), that I took time to improve by replacing Openswan with Libreswan, which is more actively developed with recent bug fixes. I also corrected a few errors in his script, added sysctl.conf and basic IPTables rules. This script is designed for use as Amazon EC2 "user-data" when launching an instance. The fact that it can be run purely from user-data makes it ideal for use on low-priced "spot instances". With minor modifications, the script can also be used on KVM- or XEN-based VPS from other providers. Main features: Fully automated IPsec/L2TP VPN install with no user interaction required Encapsulates all VPN traffic in UDP - no ESP protocol support is needed Can be directly used as the "user-data" when launching an Amazon EC2 instance Can be used in both EC2 Classic and VPC, with on-demand OR spot instances Automatically obtains public and private IP info from instance metadata Includes a basic IPTables firewall as well as sysctl.conf settings Tested on both Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 32-bit and 64-bit Link to the script: https://gist.github.com/hwdsl2/9030462 Detailed instructions can also be found at my blog article here. Instructions for use in Amazon EC2: Browse to my script at the link above. Click on the "< >" sign on top-right corner that says "View Raw". Ctrl-A to select all, Ctrl-C to copy. Then paste into your favorite editor. From there, be sure to replace the three variables "IPSEC_PSK", "VPN_USER" and "VPN_PASSWORD" with your own values. Launch an Amazon EC2 Ubuntu 12.04 instance (on-demand OR spot). Copy and paste the customized script into the "User data" field under "Advanced Details" in Step 3 (reference). Proceed to configure other details. When setting up the EC2 security group for your instance, remember to allow inbound UDP ports 500 and 4500 for the VPN, and TCP port 22 for SSH. Other ports are not required. Wait a few minutes after the instance finishes launching, and your fully configured IPsec/L2TP VPN server will be ready for you! Instructions for use on other VPS (KVM- or XEN-based): Make sure to prepare your VPS with a fresh install of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS server. Save the script as "vpnsetup.sh" on your VPS. Edit it in your favorite editor. From there, change the first line to "#!/bin/bash", replace the three variables "IPSEC_PSK", "VPN_USER" and "VPN_PASSWORD" as mentioned above, and change "PRIVATE_IP=..." and "PUBLIC_IP=..." to the actual IP addresses of your VPS. In case your VPS is run on its public IP directly with no private IP, just use that public IP for both. Save and exit the editor. Finally, run "bash vpnsetup.sh" to install. Use of the script on OpenVZ VPS is NOT recommended, as kernel support for IPsec may not be available on your host node. In addition, the IPTables rules in the script could give errors due to missing kernel modules. Feel free to reply with your comments or suggestions. Disclaimer: Although the script has been tested, there is NO guarantee and use at your own risk!

  18. Have the need for several VPN accounts. Emphasis on true and tried providers with good track record and established business. Interest in privacy, lack of logging and multiple locations with a big enough IP pool. Anyone recommend companies that qualify that you have used / are using?
  19. VPS acting as VPN

I have this problem and if anyone knows how to fix this it would be very appreciated. I have purchased an unmanaged VPS server and I have used it to setup a private vpn server. I have the server setup and connected to the vpn. I have one problem that may or may not be fixable. Maybe someone can guide me in the right direction though. So there is a method on steam where if someone intializes a voice chat directed towards a user (in this case me) then they can sniff what they are connecting to through network ananlysis tools like wireshark and filter a specific type of packet to see what they are connecting to. This then gives the person their vicitms IP address (my address). I have had a friend test this on me and we have found out that while connected to this vpn when someone performs this method it shows in their network analysis tool 2 responses, one from the VPN server IP, and one from my actual IP address. My point being is that I need to get that real ip address from showing. I came to ask the community if there might be any openvpn server config based things that I could try or something that might be beneficial to do on the machine to stop this. Also note that my IP address changes to the VPN address when visiting "whatsmyip" type websites. Sorry for the long description, but I wanted to be as thorough as possible. Thanks

Get a VPN with 20GB worth of bandwidth per month in 17 locations with access to PPTP, L2TP and OpenVPN, and PAY WHAT YOU WANT for a whole 12 months worth of service! This is great for streaming, and for having access to a variety of locations for a great price. All accounts with this offer come with 20GB bandwidth per month and this is shared across all locations, so you can use any of the locations, we don't believe in limiting to just one! You can also use up to 3 concurrent sessions meaning that you can use your VPN simultaneously on multiple devices to ensure maximum security wherever you are. Our locations are as follows: USA x5 (Chicago, Florida, Indiana, Los Angeles, New Jersey) Germany x2 (Frankfurt and Dusseldorf) UK Canada Switzerland Estonia Iceland Italy Netherlands Moldova New Zealand Singapore Payment Methods: PayPal / Google Checkout / Debit or Credit Card (Stripe) / Bitcoin --- £1.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_1 £2.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_2 £5.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_5 £7.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_7 £10.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_10 £15.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_15 £20.00/yearly recurring - Order Link - PROMOTION CODE: 12MONTHS_20 --- There is no difference in what you receive with this offer - we're simply being generous by allowing you to choose how much to pay. However, we'd much appreciate people paying what they think the service is worth. Having said that, it's absolutely fine to just select the lowest pricing if it's suitable for you - we're just appreciative of anything additional that can be offered! If you'd like to pay a different amount, please drop me a PM. Please note: Only 1 promotion code/order per customer. We will expire this offer on 1st November 2013. Current customers cannot change current package to this offer - however they can add it as an additional package Thanks, and enjoy!
