Hello,

The cpanel/whm provides warning on dedicated server as need to upgrade from centos OS to almalinux... What is difference between on both OS (centos and almalinux)? Will cpanel dedicated server works properly if we did not change/update OS?

Thanks

CentOS and AlmaLinux are similar, but AlmaLinux is a CentOS fork developed by the community. CPanel on a dedicated server may work on both, but it's recommended to check for compatibility and update the OS for optimal performance and security.

AlmaLinux is a community-driven Linux distribution designed to be a drop-in replacement for CentOS. It is based on the same source code as CentOS and is 100% binary compatible with Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). This means that AlmaLinux users can benefit from long-term support, security updates, and stability. It's an excellent option for cPanel users who want to maintain the same level of compatibility that CentOS 7 has provided. It's a good idea to do some research and compare both options to determine which one is the best fit for your cPanel environment.

The main difference between CentOS and AlmaLinux is seen in their development and support approaches. CentOS moved from a downstream, free version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) to a rolling release model, which had an impact on stability. AlmaLinux arose as a fork of RHEL driven by the community, providing long-term stability and 1:1 compatibility. Because cPanel demands a reliable and safe environment, it is advised that you migrate to AlmaLinux for continuing dependability, support, and seamless compatibility with cPanel while preserving performance and security standards. Make the switch to AlmaLinux for a dependable hosting environment and consistent cPanel performance.

Overview about CentOS and AlmaLinux:

CentOS

  • Overview: CentOS (Community ENTerprise Operating System) is a Linux distribution that provides a free, community-supported computing platform functionally compatible with its upstream source, Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL).
  • Lifecycle: CentOS 8 reached its end of life on December 31, 2021. CentOS 7 will reach its end of life on June 30, 2024.
  • Support: With CentOS 8 no longer receiving updates and CentOS 7 nearing end-of-life, it will not get new features, bug fixes, or security patches.

AlmaLinux

  • Overview: AlmaLinux is a free, open-source Linux distribution that is binary-compatible with RHEL. It was created to fill the gap left by the shift of CentOS to CentOS Stream.
  • Lifecycle: AlmaLinux follows a similar lifecycle and support period as RHEL, meaning it will receive long-term support, making it a reliable choice for production environments.
  • Support: As an actively maintained and community-driven project, AlmaLinux receives regular updates, security patches, and community support.

Upgrading to AlmaLinux from CentOS is highly recommended to maintain a secure, stable, and supported hosting environment for cPanel/WHM. Ignoring the upgrade can lead to significant security risks and operational challenges as support for CentOS continues to dwindle.
