Go to providers for cheap / dev / project boxes?

Hi there, I'm Mason (new guy alert!).

What are some go to providers to use for cheap VPS hosting? I would never run a production site on a cheap server but I don't want to pay a premium when all I need is a playground for testing. I'm more of a Linode, 6sync, and RocketVPS kind of guy... but I don't want to pay those prices for something that is just for testing.

Depends on what you want :)

Break it down to several things here.  Location, size, and support.  More than likely, you'll probably want a good network to yourself, therefore where are you located?  Eastern USA?  Western USA? Central USA?  Asia?  Europe?  Africa?  Etc...

If you're looking for a non-production environmentally friendly green computing solution I would recommend 123systems because all of their nodes feature a power saving mechanism that powers down the entire node for days or weeks at a time (bonus: their SolusVM install and website have this same eco-friendly green power saving feature bonus2: their outsourced support is also "green") . :)

on a serious note: my actual recommendations for cheap US VPS providers are limited because I currently only have 3 VPS's in the US so I'll recommend the ones I have .Iniz (NYC, LA),  Prometeus/IWStack (Dallas), and Nephoscale (San Jose, pricing is similar to DigitalOcean but unlike DO they're a real "cloud").  All 3 of these are also suitable for production use.

I should have been more clear originally, sorry!

Price: Less than $10/mo

Specs: 1GB of RAM and 20-30GB of disk

Location: Anywhere USA.

Support: Not needed

I have seen reviews for that company on WebHostingTalk and know to stear clear. I'm hoping at my price point (see above post) that I can find something reliable enough that it is running when I need to use it.

There are a number of providers which are suitable. I personally recommend Crisisc.net. I use them and have done so for over a year now for different things. Always a snappy box, high uptime and Skylar is great when there are any problems.

well also depends on the location you are from.

if you'd like to use it as a dev machine it should be the closest one you can find.

Thanks everyone. I may also just order a cheap dedicated server instead to devide up as needed for VPS servers for testing. Please see as I have questions about that too.

Not yet decided what I will do but with a dedicated server I can rent it for 2 or 3 months and just create a VPS when needed, whether it be one large one or 10 small ones for testing stuff.
