    Laptop with Long Battery Life

One nice thing about the X230 (and I think X220) is the mini-DVI port that can run a 2560x1440 external monitor.  I used one of those for a while and it was great.  I don't know if the X201 has that.  The X201 iirc only supports 8gb max DRAM, while the 220 and 230 support 16GB.  The 230 is a...

    Laptop with Long Battery Life

The X220/230 weren't exactly cheap when they were new, but you can find affordable ones on craigslist now.  The 230 probably has slightly better battery life (ivy bridge cpu) but will cost a little more and they messed up the keyboard layout in that generation. If you want something more...

    Laptop with Long Battery Life

Laptop cpus are usually dual core, with the exception of some expensive, power hungry models.  The one you linked to is dual core.  If battery life is important, I'd be wary of anything with an internal battery since they degrade over time.  You can get a netbook with a replaceable battery for...

DIY Wireless Temperature Sensors - recommendations?

I've been thinking of getting a TI SensorTag but its IR sensor doesn't handle the extreme temperature range that you wanted (60 Celsius max, I think).  Feature list is here: http://www.ti.com/ww/en/wireless_connectivity/sensortag2015/tearDown.html

    Alternative Phone OS Users?

I have a couple of Maemo phones but don't use them much.  They're not that practical.  I don't really want a smartphone anyway, since I already spend too much time online.  If I ever go for mobile data on any scale, it will probably be in a wifi hotspot that I can use with my laptop.

Starting a VPS business with $10,000. How would you spend it?

I think if you want to do big storage cheap, you have to use RAID6 or else you're spending almost 2x as much on drives.  RAID6 needs a lot of computation (complicated error correction codes) so if it's for VPS, you probably better use HW raid to offload that computation.  If it's for ftp or...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

Wow, that looks like a nice box if a little bit power hungry.   Could you run: openssl speed rsa1024 (scaleway: 196.4 sign, 3465.5 verify) time echo "scale = 1000; 4*a(1)" | bc -l  (scaleway: 1.78 sec) time echo "scale = 2000; 4*a(1)" | bc -l (scaleway: 10.28 sec) Might ask for a few...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

Some Odroids have USB3 if that matters.  The Scaleway boards have gigabit ethernet that really does seem to work at such speeds.  I don't know what the bus interface is.

ARM device with decent disk performance?

I haven't done anything with small ARM boards other than Scaleway which I can't plug anything into.  Well also some where I used to work, but I can't get to those now.  I do know some USB flash drives are now claiming to use SSD-like controllers, much faster than the usual pen drive, but they...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

http://www.midwesternmac.com/blogs/jeff-geerling/raspberry-pi-microsd-card That has some of the benchmarks in the post, and links to the other ones.

ARM device with decent disk performance?

That's a great price.  When you get the card, it would be interesting if you could run the benchmarks in the link above.  The 4K random read/write speed was a big stumbling block for memory cards and cheap SSD's in the past, but it's better now for some of them.

    [EU] Time4VPS | NEW nodes: E5-2630 v3 with DDR4 | Up to 50% discount | From 0.74 USD/month

Thanks for the quick response!  Do you use an outside processor for Visa/Mastercard, and if yes, which processor?  What does "International payments" mean--would an international money order be ok, or does it have to be a wire transfer?  (Wire transfers are quite expensive for these relatively...

Scaleway out of servers and IP's

As of a couple months ago, they were frequently out of servers, and as a separate matter, also frequently out of IP's.  I.e. they'd often be out of one or the other and sometimes out of both.  I don't know what if anything they've changed since then but I was able to spin up a server with an IP...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

The Odroid XU4 has SATA though I semi-remember hearing that it goes through a SATA to USB bridge or something lame like that.  It also has eMMC which is faster but more expensive than SD cards.  I wish they'd put M.2 SSD slots on these boards. There's considerable difference in speed between...

    [EU] Time4VPS | NEW nodes: E5-2630 v3 with DDR4 | Up to 50% discount | From 0.74 USD/month

What types of payment do you accept?  This should be in your FAQ.  I couldn't find it anywhere on your site, without trying to actually order something.

    Hetzner releases new VPS line

Update: I got the storage box (BX-100, 100GB).  It's most usable by sftp and scp, and you can mount it as sshfs though I've always heard sshfs has reliability problems (it works through sftp under the covers, I think).  I sftp'd a 1gb file to it from my Hetzner dedi and got 50MB/s transfer...

    Hetzner releases new VPS line

I think the setup fees for the EX41 line are the same as the old fees for the EX41 line, i.e. the monthly rental is lower but the setup fee stayed the same.  It also looks like they quietly got rid of the ARM server (AX) line.  Probably nobody wanted to pay the setup fee to try it out.  The...

    NanoVZ OpenVZ 128 MB (France)

That's really weird and doesn't sound usual.  I had one on DE1 (now have both) and it didn't get moved.  You could put in a ticket asking what happened.
