    Raspberry Pi Zero Released

The Espruino board is cool both as a computer coprocessor (say for crypto, plug it into USB port and keep your crypto keys off the main system) and as a smaller and more powerful Arduino alternative, good for wearable and other mini embedded applications.  It's much nicer to program than an...

    Raspberry Pi Zero Released

The HDMI is sort of ok on the bigger boards that people use as mini desktops but silly on this, which is mostly attractive for embedded. USB tethering is iffy because of the power draw.  Computer ports often can't supply enough without voltage sag.  That's a big drawback of this board...

Delimiter - KVM Resource pool / StorageVPS - Black Friday W/e 2x/4x resources

Mark, this is awesome and I'm glad your posting here.  Question about your object storage offer: is there a way to cap its bandwidth usage to the included level?  The BW allowance is not all that large and I'd hate to get whapped with overage charges.  Better to just stop serving requests til...

    Raspberry Pi Zero Released

The Zero has a USB client port but it's somewhat useless as a USB device because it uses so much power you need a separate power cube for it.  I wish someone would make such a thing that stayed 100 mA even if that meant being slower and having less memory.  Get rid of the HDMI and uses a...

    Raspberry Pi Zero Released

adafruit.com has some of the starter packs, I think.  The board plus cables, power adapter, and some other stuff.  They're out of the bare boards. They advise against powering the board from a computer usb port since the board is so power hungry, the usb port voltage can sag, corrupting data...

    Hetzner releases new VPS line

Yeah, the limits seem to be back.  I may have gotten confused or something but they did seem to be gone for a while.  I also noticed there was no news announcement.  No way to know what happened, I guess.

Do you currently use IPv6 actively at home or in the data center?

I've been wanting move my ssh daemons to listen on random ipv6 addresses (I mean picked at random from a /64 range and kept secret) so they'd be unfeasible to find by port scanning.  But I haven't done it yet, and have been wondering if there's some mistake in the concept.

Do you currently use IPv6 actively at home or in the data center?

Scaleway is interesting and I'd consider it to be in something like a late beta test right now.  I don't think they can be making money on it but at $10 per server, it wasn't attractive because of the slow cpus.  The next generation of hardware will be more powerful and probably cost more.  To...

    Hetzner releases new VPS line

I notice OVH now has its public cloud stuff available on the US site, and the older Runabove stuff has possibly gone away.  So they have very large VPS available (like 16 vcore and 240GB of ram) and you can also get their VPS SSD with Openstack add-on options and hourly billing.  They seem to...

Do you currently use IPv6 actively at home or in the data center?

Yes, I have several LES vps and generally connect to them by v6.  The shared ipv4 addresses have a habit of getting ddos'd. I mostly don't feel like I need v4 for my own servers except for one running a small web site.  The rest are personal and backend services of various sorts and v6 would...

    Hetzner releases new VPS line

I notice all Hetzner servers except for the little ARM boards seem to now come with unlimited bandwidth (they got rid of the old caps). This includes the VPS line and the x86 dedis including the auction ones. Of course their network is slow enough that it might have been hard to reach the caps...

vpsboard software getting even more annoying

It also seems to me that the wysiwyg editor on stack exchange works really well and I think it's FOSS, so I don't see why they're trying to write yet another one.  I've seen a few other ones that work too.  And BBcode was fine with me too--I didn't realize it was gone :(.  One thought (maybe...

vpsboard software getting even more annoying

Yes, it works as the implementer intended, I changed my bookmark, that's no big deal.  It just displays way too much crap.  I'd prefer something like this: https://www.reddit.com/r/haskell/new/ i.e. just show a list of threads in order of most recently updated first, so I can catch up on the...

want a VPS 100% DDOS Protected

Don't forget this is a game server, not just a website.  So failing over to another server won't keep the player sessions going.  I know that OVH has a dedicated server product with DDOS protection specifically tuned for games, but there's no such thing as 100%, and the locations may not be...

vpsboard software getting even more annoying

https://vpsboard.com/discover/unread/ gets a permission error unless you are logged in when you use it.  I usually don't bother logging in unless I'm actually going to post something, rather than just reading.  So I use https://vpsboard.com/discover which seems preferable as a redirect target. ...

Spamhaus listing us for being listed and will not remove listings now?

I think you answered your own question.  If I'm a non-spammer and the IP that I use is blacklisted because I'm hosted by someone who also hosts spammers, I end up moving elsewhere, which deprives the host of revenue.  That's part of the way the blacklist leans on hosts to get rid of spammers for...

Which KVM hosts support custom ISOs?

I'm interested in playing with the GuixSD and NixOS distros... do any KVM hosts either have ready made images, or allow setting a custom install?  Hourly billing would be nice since I might sometimes want large VM's for purposes like software builds.  If monthly I'd like to keep costs fairly low...

Is RAID worth it in your home desktop?

I think it is worth it and would use it if I could, but my main machines at home are laptops with just one drive slot.  I've had multiple HDD failures in home computers and one more gradual SSD failure.  I do back stuff up but nowhere near as systematically as I should.  So basically if I'm...

Do web host really use SSD drives?

I haven't used HDD for anything but bulk archive and media storage in years, plus a few cheap VPS.  SSD has almost made it obsolete.  The SSD VPS that I have are way more responsive than HDD ones, even from good providers.  I have a dedicated server with HDD because that's how you get TB's of...

vpsboard software getting even more annoying

I didn't understand what was supposed to mean, and I see something even weirder now, it's apparently some kind of image of hex numbers, rather than a text string.  More IPB annoying weirdness I guess.
