How visitors can trust on your hosting business?

I do not think that is right. My understanding (of UK law which is what I know best, although its probably the same in most common law countries) is that a sole trader using a trading name in a contract does not affect its enforceability. However it can cause problems if there is doubt about...

How visitors can trust on your hosting business?

I thought about this while reading: https://vpsboard.com/topic/8501-why-people-pay-so-much-for-big-brand-vps-and-cloud/?do=findComment&comment=104833 You want to be trusted. Give people the information they need to decide whether they can trust you. Tell them who runs the business, how...

Why people pay so much for big brand VPS and cloud

I am not sure that actually helps with the underlying problem: how do you find out whether small suppliers are 1) stable and 2) provider good networks, performance etc. short of the impractical and expensive step of trying a realistic test of each one that meets basic criteria, there is no way...

Why people pay so much for big brand VPS and cloud

Using my LAN is not an option for me (work from home freelancer). I have no existing boxes of my own. I do not have any existing dedis, on the other hand I have two VPSs and two shared hosting accounts (each hosting multiple sites) just for myself, and I my clients have a lot more (including...

    Wanted, help securing Xenserver

We may also want some performance tuning done, so there is likely to be more work than I initially thought.

Should universal internet access be a human right?

It depends what you mean by a human right. I agree it ranks below food and water, on the other hand you can get excluded from many things if you do not have it (its a lot harder to find a job without internet access in any developed country). On the other hand, I think banning internet access...

Why people pay so much for big brand VPS and cloud

What do you mean by self host other than running a dedi? Do you mean "self host and run dedis or colo gear"? Even if you exclude them from the discussion, a lot of what I saw applies to properly run businesses, not just the smallest and most clueless ones.

Why people pay so much for big brand VPS and cloud

Not only that, there are whole companies running on platforms (like Heroku) that run on AWS.

Why people pay so much for big brand VPS and cloud

The reasoning is not necessarily correct, in fact I agree much of it. Yes, big companies may not remain around, but it is usually easy to check on their finances. While brands change hands and service may deteriorate, they are unlikely to get shut down abruptly. They are not necessarily more...

Why people pay so much for big brand VPS and cloud

There have been a few threads that discussed 1) why people pay a lot more to use AWS etc. and 2) the likely consolidation of the VPS industry. Looking at this from my perspective as a user, I have done a lot of shopping over the last year or two, buying VPSs for clients. More recently I have...

    Wanted, help securing Xenserver

A client of mine has a low end dedi running running Xenserver with three VPSs on it. We are able to run the VPSs, but we need someone familiar with Xenserver to to ensure the host OS is secure and up dated. I do not expect it to be difficult for anyone familiar with Xenserver, but, after...

Quadranet Needs to BAN SMTP. Spammer UTOPIA.

I do, and most of clients do, if only to send and error reporting and web form emails to ourselves. Admittedly it would not be terribly difficult to send it, but I have not bothered so far. True, but that bothers me. Instead of it being an open service everyone can run, we are are being...

    The cesspit / chat thread.

@Aldryic C'boas I have fail2ban on some installs, just not this one which was set up by someone else. It has it now!

    The cesspit / chat thread.

Just had a Debian VPS compromised by this: https://blog.avast.com/2015/01/06/linux-ddos-trojan-hiding-itself-with-an-embedded-rootkit/ OVH cut off networking to the whole server (which runs 3 VPSs) until we sorted it out. It had a firewall with only three ports allowing incoming...

LHMP - Hiawatha PHP-FPM MariaDB, install and administration

Should those of us who want just Hiawatha and not this whole stack add the Debian repo for Hiawatha and install from there instead? I am thinking of using Haiawatha to server static content for multiple sites and as a proxy for the app servers behind it (mostly python and Postgres) so the only...

Anyone running solar powered stuff at home?

In US dollar terms, Sri Lankan prices vary from 2 and a bit to about 30 cents a kWk on domestic tarrifs with rates increasing with increasing consumption. The people who are switching are those on the higher tarrifs. Thanks to looking it up, I may have found a cheaper tarrif to switch to.

Seagate faces class-action lawsuit over 3TB hard drive failure rates

It is not just about the Backblaze data (which is evidence that the drives were less reliable than comparable drives) but that plus a high level of consumer complaints. They also quote Amazon and Newegg customer reviews.

Anyone running solar powered stuff at home?

Becoming very common in Sri Lanka - tropical, high electricity prices, domestic electricity tariffs that rise with increased usage means it now makes economic sense. I suspect it does in a lot of tropical countries.

Seagate faces class-action lawsuit over 3TB hard drive failure rates

It looks as though the case is based on: 1) Higher failure rate than advertised 2) A high proportion of replacements were also defective https://www.hbsslaw.com/cases/seagate/pressrelease/seagate-hard-drives-consumers-file-national-class-action-lawsuit-against-seagate-for-defective-hard-drives

    Alternative Phone OS Users?

If you buy one I would like to know if it is as good as it looks. I am going on the basis that it is a continuation of Meego, and, while Meego was not much of a success, the last Meego phone Nokia made (the N9) seems to have been really good and Jolla was founded by people from the N9 team...
