    The gun thread

You see this? This... is my boomstick! The twelve-gauge double-barreled Remington. S-Mart's top of the line. You can find this in the sporting goods department. That's right, this sweet baby was made in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Retails for about a hundred and nine, ninety five. It's got a walnut...

    Tell me a joke Thread

An old favorite of mine, modified for this forum. A hindu, a Jew, and the GVH CEO are driving in the country one night and their car breaks down.  They see a light on at a nearby farmhouse and walk over to it. The farmer answers the door and they ask to use his phone.  "Haven't got a phone,"...

Study on failure rates of SSDs

I didn't think Apple said that but rather the media. http://www.theguardian.com/technology/blog/2008/jan/16/sohowlongmighttheflashdr

    Physical spam mail.

There's a lot of junk mail I don't mind getting.  I like getting mail. But some of the stuff is really repetitive and annoying.  I used to get a "personal letter" from Diane someone at Citibank three times a week at one point, inviting me to open an account.  Someone in the media actually...

Study on failure rates of SSDs

http://users.ece.cmu.edu/~omutlu/pub/flash-memory-failures-in-the-field-at-facebook_sigmetrics15.pdf I admit I was lazy and just read The Register's summary: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/06/22/facebook_reveals_ssd_failure_rate_trough/

Hostress, LLC has acquired GreenValueHost v2 Clients and domain.

That's what I would have thought, but Duke is talking about paying off large amounts of debt, etc. as if he took it on. Another question is why a company like CC would extend $17,500 worth of credit to GVH.

Hostress, LLC has acquired GreenValueHost v2 Clients and domain.

I'm still confused why anyone would assume Jonny's debt. $17,500?  That is insane.  $5,000 would be insane.  $1,000 would be insane. I can see someone looking at Jonny's accounts and saying "ok, there are X number, here are the plans, half or more will quit, here is the price I'll pay and then...

    nvm, it was already posted.

Hostress, LLC has acquired GreenValueHost v2 Clients and domain.

The funny thing is that all these business "transactions" amount to about $50 in actual revenue.  The way these people write press releases, you'd think the NY Stock Exchange was going to temporarily halt trading on the news or something.

Car Ride Service Uber Ruled EMPLOYER by California Labor Commission

This is awesome.  I hate uber...instead of passing a sawbuck to a cabbie you anonymously hail you have to use an app, get some random barely-vetted guy who's not driving with proper insurance, and get stalked by their executives (and inevitably the government). Guess that whole "sharing...

WebHostingTalk Worst of the Hosting Industry

I made a note to send you some drill instructor porn for Christmas. (Well, I assume it exists...I don't actually have any and am somewhat afraid to google for it.)

I take September 15 as my "Jonny Nguyen will be back in the hosting biz by this date" pool entry.

    Synology LAN speeds?

I seem to recall you mentioning you had some sort of setup where you backed up your home systems to the synology, and then from there to crashplan, or...something like that?

    Synology LAN speeds?

Excluding the cost of the actual hard drives, for $200 and 13W of power, this Synology provides a ton of features - I didn't do a line-by-line comparison to FreeNAS. Crucially, it is just using ext4 under the covers so in theory I could pop these disks out and move them to a non-synology...

    Synology LAN speeds?

Interestingly, it seems to do OK with TWO copies at that speed.  While one copy from Linux was going on, I did a second from Windows and it did a 1GB file in about 30 seconds which is the same 30MB/sec-ish. On Windows, the box is an i7 while my OpenBSD and Linux boxes are i3, but I don't think...

    Synology LAN speeds?

You synology folk...what speed for read/write do you see on your Synology? With the following setup... Synology DS215j with 2 x WD 6TB Red drives in RAID-1 NetGear DS108 gig-E switch Either an OpenBSD i3 or a Linux i3 connected on same switch ...I see 30 to 35MB/sec write or read.  CPU on...
