Host your own DNS or use a DNS specialist company?

Like most things, all the moving parts are tedious horror to keep track of. I've used CloudFlare - isn't bad, just might end up with downtime and vendor that can change biz on whim.  We see that sort of thing too often with tech. Rage4 is alright too.  Free tier and some features might be...

EIG Acquires Lowlife Fathi Said's Spam Friendly Operation Ecommerce Inc / IX Web Hosting

Ecommerce Inc / IX Web Hosting is one of the entirely worst shops out there.  Support seems moderately ESL (English as Second Language).  Stuff goes right over their heads and lousy resolution. The joke they have posing as a control panel is enough to give anyone brain cancer. EIG...

    California Data Breach Report 2016

When does California start holding companies accountable for wrongful data disclosures? Like 20 million~ of the disclosures involved social security numbers.  I for one believe SSNs shouldn't be used for anything except SS benefits.  This using such as some form of identification is so very...

India's National sub $4 quad core Android Smartphone

Should be expected... Time to fashion a how-to on port mirroring and analyzing data flows from a device like this.   Time to audit the hell out of everything that shows up on your network I say. Let me know if you find a way.  I'll pick one up too.

India's National sub $4 quad core Android Smartphone

Land of maximum profit yo'.  Support largess.  Daddy needs a new jet plane. Seriously, it make it hurt to me - the Indian $4 phone vs. what we can actually buy now in the States.   I picked up a Samsung something at like $50 or was it $100 new.  It specs no better than this phone and...

FREE domain (for WHMCS license holders)

How I see things and have, however alt domains are really gaining traction.  .com domains have gone way up in price.  I remember like $6.50 a year, years back, now common registrars are cranked up past $14. Alt domains burn my bridge with their premium pricing for key domain names and short...

    SolusVM or Proxmox ?

That's how I feel about ProxMox.  It makes an excellent same-company virtualization environment and how I see it used most often (I in fact use ProxMox this way)... Novice with ProxMox still, on my edumacation list to get more power user with it.

    Fiber Optic Switch recommendations

Those are neat.  I somehow missed the multiple SPF models.. 10 of them ;) Tee hee... shame it's just 10 Gbit speed. I already use Mikrotik (leisure user of their gear - need to get edumacated on the finer points of their gear ability).  Control stuff for their OS still feels other side of the...

Own an MVPower DVR / NVR for CCTV - you've been pwned.

I am right there with you. It's all network connected tech that needs quarantined. Really any new device on a network should have hard and strict rules about communication.   All network activity for some period of time should be logged and recorded and audited... Until all clear, nothing...

Low powered desktop computer spec recommendations?

I just was looking for my own reference and geez has CCTV stuff fallen for the DVR units.  Cameras still are high all said, but the DVR ready made units are crazy cheap. Lots of $100 or less options.  Embedded Linux :) I'd really consider looking at these units and finding one with good...

Harddrive Buyers - BackBlaze's Latest Drive Fail Rates

Interesting read from BackBlaze - a storage / backup company.  They track their drives deployed, failures and total hours operated.   This is their latest breakdown.  They tout Seagate even though data appears to me to show Seagate failing higher than say HGST.  Western Digital appears to be...

Facts I've Learned About Trying to Quit Smoking

Unsure if e-cigs are any better big picture.   I mean as a non smoker it's better as I don't smell the filth on folks...  But health wise, it's likely a different ingestion part / method and the fluids aren't the same as dried tobacco. I know a bunch of folks that went from smokers to e-cig...

India's National sub $4 quad core Android Smartphone

Definitely the type of usage I'd have / interest.   Amazing even with government support that they are able to get whole phone down to $4.  Makes me feel like rest of us are looking at costs of things all wrong and getting fleeced.

    SolusVM or Proxmox ?

SolusVM is what every Tom, Dick and Harry uses.  It works.  Price is low enough too (ignore the unsustainable crybabies whining over $10~ a month license per machine). ProxMox is fine, will need module for it as your linked.  I haven't used that module, but I am sure others have...

    Fiber Optic Switch recommendations

Oh I agree it is... all relativity..  Yes, much cheaper than historical. Just a hefty chunk to experiment with front side.   Seeing the power consumption on these fiber switches is rather high.  Better chunk of a KW per hour... Definitely need / niche for 8 ports with something like this...
