Backups Marketed but not Upheld, who's the fault for the lack of backup? Provider vs Customer

Some hosts do backups only for their own use, i.e. if the hard drive crashes or there's some other failure at the host side, they use the backup to restore it.  But if a customer deletes their own file by accident and wants it back, the host tells the customer to use their own backup.  That's...

[Python] Any interest in group learning?

I haven't used Django per se but am a pretty good Python backend dev.  If you open a thread I can share some things and probably learn some things.  I do think Python is a good beginning language and JS isn't really that much different except it runs in browsers and is more error prone in...

HELP! I have a VPS problem! (It's been 2 days since my last order)

I think I have a dozen or so but most of them are super cheap (low end spirit).  My "real" stuff is mostly storage and computation rather than public-facing services, and that stuff is mostly on a Hetzner dedi.

Do you use a VPN for your normal internet browsing?

I use one most of the time but not always.

    Learn Node.js for €100! (~5 hours of one-on-one tutoring)

I tried out Jitsi Meet ( http://meet.jit.si/)a week or so ago and it was actually pretty good, at least with my friend's Chrome browser (I use Firefox but an older version that Jitsi doesn't support).  I don't see any reason to use Skype.

    Tell me a joke Thread

[from usenet] A man is driving down the road and his car breaks down near a monastery.  He goes to the monastery, knocks on the door, and says, "My car broke down. Do you think I could stay the night?" The monks graciously accept him, feed him dinner, even fix his car. As the man tries to fall...

Looking for some providers in unique locations to sponsor a small VPS

Try lowendspirit.com if you don't mind "super cheap" instead of "sponsored".  They have a number of cool international locations.  There is also already at least one ping service running from there though, I think.

Allowing a VPS/Dedicated server to receive SMS text messages ?

There are email to SMS gateways and I think there are also likely some SMS to email provided by phone companies. I have a few phone numbers with vitelity.com that can receive SMS and can surely be forwarded to a VPS somehow (through SIP if necessary), but I haven't looked into doing that due to...

Onra Host SSD Reseller - 60% OFF LIFETIME | Free Domain, IP, WHMCS, SSL, & Much More

I thought there was a 1 offer per week per host limit on vpsboard.  This is starting to seem spammy.

Removing 3rd Party "Spyware" from vpsBoard

Something weird happened with the site yesterday, I was unable to post without unblocking gogoleapis which the site now uses to serve jquery.min.js.  I'm not sure if jquery was coming from the vpsboard server before, or it was coming from googleapis (which I've had blocked the whole time) and...

Where to order photo prints for uncommon dimensions/sizes?

Use photo editor to set the exif dpi so that the image area comes out the size you want, then print picture at next bigger size (so you have blank space around the sides) and trim off the blank space with a rotary trimmer.  This assumes you want a cheap print.  You can go to a custom lab and get...

    Vultr and false claims.

I've never thought there was a really clear distinction between "cloud" and vps's, enough to get regulators involved.  There was a thread about it a while back and what I got out of it was that "cloud" hosts 1) offer hourly billing; 2) let you spin instances up and down with an API instead of a...

    Mobile VOIP solutions?

I remember looking into voip.ms and being freaked out by some aspect of their TOS, but looking at it now the stuff I see is just annoying and silly rather than really scary (e.g. they say they may sue you if you use greasemonkey to alter their web interface in your own browser, or make other...

    Vultr and false claims.

I think the 4x faster claim can be meaningful, and the clock speed of the cpu's aren't really relevant.  The issue with aws is you often get badly overloaded hosts, especially with the smaller instances.  Yes the iron underneath might have 3 ghz clock or whatever, but you're sharing it with 20...

    Mobile VOIP solutions?

I've played with linphone (linphone.org) a little bit, for computer to computer conversation.  It supports SIP so there are some POTS gateways available that I didn't try.  It is FOSS and supports encryption, both of which are big pluses imho.

What is your favorite forum / community software?

A project I'm involved with is using discourse... it does have nice design but it's a big ram hog, demanding on browsers, downloads a huge blob of static javascript that slows down page loading, and overall seems kind of tasteless in these regards.  I prefer the simpler offerings and even think...
