Why do providers not add your data to your IP (SWIP)?

You might not want to identify yourself to every computer that you open a network connection to.  They don't need the info and aren't entitled to it and there are kinds of ways in which they can abuse it.

Why do providers not add your data to your IP (SWIP)?

Some VPS hosts offer SWIP if you want it.  For privacy reasons, I wouldn't want them doing it without being asked.

    Does your computer ever sleep?

My main pc is a laptop and I set it up to not suspend when I shut the lid on AC power (I like to leave the network connections up) but it suspends with the lid closed on battery power, and that works mostly perfectly fine.  I use it on AC at home but I do take it places in suspend mode.

    ARM device to replace desktop?

Laptops use a little bit of power when suspended and I think that's mostly to keep the DRAM contents alive, which the cpu architecture won't affect at all.  My current laptop has 12GB of DDR3 ram and drains its battery (60 WH?) in maybe 5 days, so it uses about 0.5W when suspended.  It might use...

    Home Network Architecture

Is there literally no gap around or under the door?  You can usually fit a wall hugging ethernet cable under non-outside doors.

    ARM device to replace desktop?

Contrary to popular belief ARM cpu's are not more power-efficient than comparably fast x86's.  Intel has traditionally focused on fast cpus where power consumption is a secondary concern, while ARM cpu's have used less power but have also been slower, and the power to speed ratio is usually in...

    256MB KVM

I think buyvm now accepts bitcoin through some online processor, I forget which.

High-End EU Dedicated Servers starting at 59EUR

Dunno anything about the company or the network connectivity in Bulgaria, but the 16 core E5 offer is pretty impressive, especially considering ram upgrade to 128GB is just another 100 euro/mo.  It's great when you can split your workload across smaller machines but sometimes there's no...

    BBS software?

Raindog: the idea is that you and I trust the admin and the board software is operating properly.  In this situation, we can exchange PM's using normal board features and without having to mess with external applications like GPG, and nobody but us can read the messages.  In particular, if...

    BBS software?

Yes it can work with old messages.  It could probably be added to IPB but I couldn't see doing it for free given that IPB is proprietary.  If IPB or anyone else wants to hire me to add it to IPB, we can talk ;).  Main issue with old messages is after encryption, the plaintext might conceivably...

    BBS software?

Thanks for the informative post.  Yeah I don't know of bbs'es currently doing encrypted PM so I've figured on maybe coding it myself, which is why I cared what the implementation language is.  No it wouldn't use JS.  Yes it would take plaintext over SSL so it would only protect stored messages. ...

    BBS software?

Hadn't heard of Amiexpress (also called /X) before but just looked it up.  Sounds pretty cool.  It ran on Amigas back in the day, which had maybe 1MB of ram?  Before that there was Usenet, which handled traffic loads that were large for BBS's even by today's standards, on minicomputers of the...

    BBS software?

I can tell you that as of about 5 years ago, switching from phpBB to VBB was a big improvement on a certain board I was on at the time.  It's of course possible that more recent versions of phpBB are better than the old ones so phpBB is good today.  It's probably gotten easier to do this stuff...

    BBS software?

One impression I had as of a few years ago was that the really large forums all ran VBB, including a lot that had to migrate to VBB from other software.  The other programs (phpBB was one as I remember) became sluggish and/or flaky once the number of messages hit some amount.  I wonder if things...

    BBS software?

Thanks, MannDude.  Are any stats available about vpsboard: how many messages it has, amount of storage used by the db, etc.?  Why did you pick the rather expensive Invasion instead of a free system?  That's not a criticism, but just wondering what the $$ gets you.

    BBS software?

Thanks, the wikipedia list was informative and shows almost everything is in php, wow.  The others were in java or perl.  I was hoping for python or maybe something trendy like erlang or haskell.  Discourse has interesting ideas and I'll probably check out its features to get a sense of what...

Should each website on a VPS have it's own IP?

There's another thread where this issue came up... using separate ip's can be helpful if a site gets ddos'd.  You can nullroute the dos'd address and the neighboring sites keep accepting traffic.

    BBS software?

Would like to get people's thoughts and recommendations on BBS software.  I have some particular preferences/requirements that I'll list, but go ahead and post whatever you think is interesting even if it doesn't fit them. 1) Strongly prefer 100% FOSS software but if proprietary, it should be a...

Anybody using Tahoe-LAFS? How are you connecting to it?

What do you mean about multiple countries?  Is that a LAFS setup?

Anybody using Tahoe-LAFS? How are you connecting to it?

I didn't study it in detail but looked at it enough to conclude that it wasn't all that practical for what you're asking.  Take a look at tarsnap instead.
