Best way to backup websites on a VPS?

I personally just manually rsync or scp tarballs around once in a while, but there's a couple other threads on this topic with better solutions.  If you have a live database with critical data on the vps, you probably want replication as well as backup.  That's usually a matter of db...

WE PRICE MATCH! Show us what you're paying, let us MATCH IT -or- BEAT IT!

I currently have i7-3770, 2x 3TB SATA drives, 32GB ram, and 20TB bw on 1gbps network, 1x ipv4 and /64 ipv6, at $28.57 euro/month (about $32 at current FX).  Can you come anywhere near that?  Thanks.

    Introducing the vpsBoard Library!

I think we can do without the entry about purposely hogging disk space on shared hosts.  I'm sort of understanding about the motivation behind it (it was a dig against a certain disliked provider) but it doesn't seem like something needing immortalization in the library.

Are you sure you have the price right?  And 108MB?

    1U/Dual L5520/128GB RAM/4x2TB HW RAID - 650EUR

This is nuts, 650 eur for a 128gb server and it wasn't snapped up in 1 second?  :o The ram alone is worth more than that.

Prometeus 128MB KVM, 2 year anniversary

All good things come to an end.  I got an email from Prometeus this morning saying there had been a big power outage at their Milano campus earlier in the night, and they had staff on site putting stuff back together.  I ssh'd into my vps and sure enough it had been rebooted, so its uptime was...

    crissic.net - Reviews

21:56:05 up 191 days, 19:22,  1 user,  load average: 0.00, 0.00, 0.00   I have a 512mb Crissic openvz which is working great: over 6 months uptime (I think that means no downtime since when I got it) as you can see above.  Network, vps speed, Sklyar's responsiveness to queries on this board...

Taking Regular & Secure backups on your server

Splitice, sorry for slow reply, just saw this. 1) the reason for using public key is to avoid having to store any private keys on any of the servers.  The private key is supplied to the backup server during a restore, but it's not present at any other time. 2) The way public key crypto is done...

I need a rackmount chasis custom built.

We did this where I used to work, we got 1U enclosures made and they were stupidly expensive, way over $300 each even though we got a couple thousand of them IIRC.  They cost more than the computer stuff inside the box.  I think the idea was that the cost was supposed to decrease as quantity...

Taking Regular & Secure backups on your server

Interesting.  I'd suggest using a public encryption key, so there's no need to keep a secret key at either end.  You only need the decryption key if you actually want to restore from the backup.

Domain Registration with Included Free Email

Hover.com did that for many years, included 10 or 15 free mailboxes per domain but then they started charging $3 per mailbox, suddenly kicking up people's renewal fees by $30 or $45.  Cancelling the mailboxes resulted in renewal rates for the domains being jacked up to include recent price...

What is better: Renting or owning your hardware?

I keep seeing budget dedicated servers that are far cheaper than anything I could do with owned equipment.  I own a fairly nice server (well a bit obsolete now) that is sitting in my kitchen, because I could never find colo space that was competitive with just renting an OVH or Hetzner server.  ...

Looking for a VPS in Missouri or Illinois

joesdatacenter.com has some dedis starting at $16/month, almost kimsufi-like pricing.  Might not have enough oomph for you though.  The more expensive ones would.

Vultr - What hardware exactly are they running on their SSD nodes?

Attached is the /proc/cpuinfo from an OpenVZ container that I have that's slabbed inside a Vultr VM in Tokyo, Japan.  This is a lowendspirit.com vps if that matters.  Some info from it: vendor_id    : GenuineIntel cpu family    : 6 model        : 60 model name    : Vultr Virtual CPU 2...

Another reason to dump Verizon - always trackable super cookie

Thing is Verizon won't connect to phones that you don't get from them, and with phones you do get from them, they control the software and keep reinstalling their malware with OTA updates.  The only Verizon internet product I think of using is a mifi hot spot, so I'd connect my laptop to a VPN...

    OVH vps, kimsufi

OVH Classic vps are openvz slabbed inside vmware while their "cloud" vps are directly vmware.  The classic vps is IMHO comparable to the budget vps's that we're all used to here, if priced a little higher.  I had one for a couple months and performance was fine for a cheap vps.  My main...

Year End Sale! Up to 8GB RAM! Start from $8/mo

New title is still uninformative.  If it says $8/mo it should also say 2gb since that is what the $8 gets.
