Anyone want my OVH dedi? $60/mo

    - It's an old SP16 plan (formerly SP1): i5-3570S quad core processor, 16gb ram, 2x2TB SATA drives, 100 mbps network interface, unmetered traffic (I think), comes with 500gb of ftp/nfs backup storage at no extra charge, in BHS (Quebec) and billed through ovh.us. - It expired a couple days ago (I...

    ssl for *.domain.tld pricerange

Right, but same question--how does SingleHop do that?  Are they connected with GlobalSign somehow?  Are wildcard certificates as scammy as domain validation certificates, where resellers pay just a few dollars for them but they're usually retailed at $50+?  It looks possible, though not nice, to...

    ssl for *.domain.tld pricerange

Wait, how do they do that?  It looks like you can get one with the purchase of a $6.00 per month vps.  Are they just losing money on the deal until you've stayed a fairly long period?

BuyVM announces Europe, Anycast IP's, Floating IP's, & Bandwidth pooling!

Yeah, ditto here, I think I suggested it on irc a couple years ago, I think everyone has wanted it but no small host has actually gotten it together up til now.  Once Fran has enough users for multiple anycast blocks, maybe there could be a US-only one and a separate world domination one? I...

    OVH vs Hetzner dedi

If anyone cares, the 34 euro 32gb servers have dried up, but they seem to have quietly introduced a 16gb server (again i7-3770 with 2x 3tb drives) for 31 euro which if you don't need the 32gb ram is an even better deal, and they seem to have a steady supply of them.  Since my 32gb box now has...

BuyVM announces Europe, Anycast IP's, Floating IP's, & Bandwidth pooling!

I don't see the problem here, big CDN's use anycast.  The anycast ip's are being assigned to users one at a time, if I understand it.  It's not like /24's are simply being burned.  If anything it's helping conserve IP's.  Instead of buying three vps's (one at each location) each with its own IP...

    Backplane killing drives?

Raid 5 and raid 6 put a lot of stress on drives because every update has to write stuff on all the drives, more seeking, etc.  I can understand the advice to stick with raid 1 or raid 10 on consumer drives.  Enterprise drives are built to handle much more mechanical load.

BuyVM announces Europe, Anycast IP's, Floating IP's, & Bandwidth pooling!

Added: it occurs to me that the other end of the anycast IP doesn't even have to be a proxy.  It can be a virtual host that just serves a redirect to a known working vps from the user-configured list, and that's enough most of the time.  So it could be super cheap.  The point of anycast is just...

BuyVM announces Europe, Anycast IP's, Floating IP's, & Bandwidth pooling!

I thought the closest similar product was something like vr.org that cost hundreds/month :).  I've been looking into ways to do it with OVH/Cloudflare and that's more in the $20 range but limited.  Hmm yeah I see what you mean about opening new locations.  But, if the other end of the anycast...

BuyVM announces Europe, Anycast IP's, Floating IP's, & Bandwidth pooling!

Yeah!!!!  The anycast is the most exciting thing that's happened in budget VPS for a while.  I was just in a discussion about it with one of the Low End Spirit guys, about fronting a bunch of LES with a shared OVH or maybe Cloudflare infrastructure CDN to reverse proxy the LES containers.  But...

    Your highest uptime servers

I haven't seen a security patch (Debian) in a while that required a reboot.  Did I miss any? My current uptimes: Prometeus 128MB KVM:  up 853 days, 14:54 It has had 0 downtime since I got it a couple years ago.  On the other hand I haven't done much with it. Inceptionhosting 128MB Xen PV: up...

Best way to get people to join a small community?

Site is unattractive because the pitch is so scammy.  Fill out surveys to earn domains?  Already suspicious.  Also not obviously stated is whether they're top level domains (who is paying for them?) or subdomains of the host domain (worthless).  All in all I wouldn't have spent more than 2...

Modern methods to stress test a VPS?

I have to agree that vps stress tests and benchmarks are annoying.  Everyone including me does them once in a while, but it's best to keep them of short duration (under a minute) and don't do them too often.  Cheap VPS are great as light duty servers with occasional bursts of activity.  For...

BuyVM announces free CPU upgades on all 256MB+ OVZ's in Las Vegas

Secure Key appears to be a hardware random number generator, definitely useful but not especially relevant to speeding up particular crypto algorithms.  AES-NI has been around for years, and SGX (a key encapsulation and signed code scheme) is not out yet.

    OVH vs Hetzner dedi

I emailed them again pointing out an increased number of UNC errors (SMART attribute 187) and they agreed to replace the drive.  They put in another Toshiba drive similar to the one already installed, and it was new or almost-new.  After some help from #vpsboard irc guys rebuilding the RAID and...

    OVH vs Hetzner dedi

As expected Hetzner support has told me they won't replace the drive until it actually fails.  It's raid 1 but I'm still a little worried.  Also there is no monitoring of any type going to Hetzner staff (unlike OVH).  If a drive fails they won't notice unless I run my own monitoring that...

    OVH vs Hetzner dedi

Thanks, I notice you didn't mention the drive model.  My drive has had a bunch of uncorrectable errors, which seems like a possible cause of concern.  My smartmon output is here: Device Model: ST3000DM001-9YN166 SMART...

    OVH vs Hetzner dedi

Hetzner seems to have just introduced a new server to their robot system and apparently deployed a lot of them.  i7-3770, 32gb ram, 2x 3tb drives, for 34 euro fixed price (non auction).  This is vs the earlier ones with 16gb ram that were costing a little more in the auctions.  The 32gb's were...

hubiC by OVH 25 GB of free storage in the cloud!

I remember someone telling me he got good speed from hubic when the client was a dedi in a french OVH data center.  Maybe an OVH VPS is good enough for that too, since it's on the OVH network.  I've been wanting to get around to trying it from my OVH server that's in BHS, Canada.
