Opening a business in another country

I would buy a VPS in Zimbabwe, particularly if I can pay in the local currency.

    2015 New Years Resolutions?

My new year's resolution is to be more patient with people who ask me stupid questions about computers. Seriously, that's my resolution.  I am pledging to not reply to my relatives with LMGTFY links.  I promise to repeat the same freaking instructions for unzipping a .zip full of pics I put on...

Proposed updates to rules -- A discussion

I like this idea.  I come here to read all the insightful commentary from learned thinkers and sparkling conversationalists, etc. - if I want to look at offers I go look in the offers forum. However, I imagine some people like to see offers in the sidebar. Perhaps in his copious free time...

    Tor takedowns

The Internet is one big dorknet. You can pirate anything with a seedbox and publuc trackers. That is an appalling simplification. If you want freedom, you get the whole bundle.

    Tor takedowns

Sounds like one exit node operator's servers were hacked rather than government takedowns:   https://lists.torproject.org/pipermail/tor-talk/2014-December/036078.html In the blog entry's comments: "There are a bunch of research papers looking at exactly this question....the current situation...

Secure Dragon's Wyvern gets its biggest update yet!

There's an argument that running ssh on a >1024 port is a bad idea because a non-root user could start a process on that port, imitate sshd, and capture passwords.  To be a real threat, this would mean  the server would need to have local users beyond the owner (I'd wager the vast majority of...

Secure Dragon's Wyvern gets its biggest update yet!

Just out of curiosity, what is the technical barrier to supporting KVM? Or is that a planned feature? Congrats on Wyvern's development!

    "The Interview" and Sony hacks.

Every time I read the latest developments, it's hard for me to repress a big grin. Let's remember Sony's past actions: In 2005, Sony started distributing rootkits on its music CDs.  They did this for 3 years.  About 22 million CDs.  These rootkits auto-installed and contained malware that was...

    Why do people send spam?

Judging by my spam folder, the root cause of spam is that there is a tragic surplus of young, attractive women in the world.  They are all very desperate to meet middle-aged men like me.   These woman appear to have some issues.  For example, they also seem uninterested in any sort of...

Apache on Centos 7 - what is -DFOREGROUND ?

That makes sense.  Well, in the sense that anything about systemd makes sense

Apache on Centos 7 - what is -DFOREGROUND ?

I yum'd httpd on a new Centos 7 box and when I did a ps (after systemctl start), I see httpd -DFOREGROUND What is that? If I change this in httpd.service: [Service] #Type=notify Type=forking #ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS -DFOREGROUND ExecStart=/usr/sbin/httpd $OPTIONS ...then it's...

VPS Request for a P2H Site?

Yep. There's really no business model that supports free hosting, except for the few who do it as a hobby.  So unless you're willing to pay for a monthly server (or VPS) cost + cpanel/WHM + some kind of user management tool (like WHMCS), you should abandon the idea.  Advertising might offset a...

what happens when you're at a library with free wifi and a laptop

I'm thinking the library part of this really has nothing to do with the rest of the story. Executive summary: someone won $50 on the Internet.

HELP! How do I get Filezilla access to my centos 6.0 vps?

An alternative is  PermitRootLogin without-password This would allow you to login as root with an ssh key, but not with a password. Unfortunately, now that I look at FileZilla, it doesn't appear to support ssh keys.  Maybe I'm missing the option...?

HELP! How do I get Filezilla access to my centos 6.0 vps?

You may want to set up the connection in FileZilla as SFTP and not FTP.  You probably aren't running an FTP server on a stock CentOS box. Some more details of what error you're getting would be helpful.

What the heck will I do with this beast...

Yeah, I can't count.  You're right. I will probably play with it for a bit and if I can't find a use, donate it.  I think some projects could use another switch.
