What the heck will I do with this beast...

A cousin (who also works in IT) asked my wife, "do you think your husband would want this?" "Probably," she said. A couple hours later, I'm pulling it out of the van.   48-port HP ProCurve 8000m.  Only bummer is that all the ports are 10/100 - no gigabit.   Haven't turned it on yet...

    Seeking servers sponsorship for project

I think the ideal instant messaging system would: - be entirely encrypted with a unique session key per conversation.  it shouldn't matter if I pick '1234' as my application password - that's just to prevent someone from sneaking up to my laptop and using my IM client.  The IM app should pick a...

Happy 12/13/14...well, except for you Europeans

Today is 12/13/14. Which we Americans can celebrate...and Europeans can only look on enviously, because there will never be a 13th month that will allow them to celebrate 12/13/14. This reminds me of Pi Day (3/14) which is also impossible for Europeans to enjoy. I admit the American...

Digital Ocean gets $50 Million Credit Line

The funny thing is that NO ONE is making money on the cloud. Amazon certainly isn't. Microsoft is not with Azure...and they're committed to matching Amazon prices. For Google it's hard to say because it's mixed with everything else but I doubt their IaaS business is profitable. IBM, HP...

    Managed cPanel VPS

WiredTree or Knownhost.  I've used both and had a good experience with both.  My extended comments are at the site in my sig but in short, both are good.  WiredTree's plans have a little more disk, while KnownHost's have a little more RAM, but they're pretty close.

The Pirate Bay Raided By Police, Site Down

The Pirate Bay was...meh.  Ancient software and poor community.  Dumb actions like forcing people to use magnets (I don't mind them but some people don't and they can be a headache depending on how you work).  Poor search.  Tons of dead torrents. KAT is so much more friendly and easy to use...

Proposed updates to rules -- A discussion

Alternate: make every new provider donate a couple VPSes for 30 or 60 days to qualified reviewers.  No review, no offer allowed. That acts as a gate on submission time, and also you can credibly claim that all offers here are reviewed.  Also for a lot of summerhosts, one VPS for a month is...

What is wrong with Law Enforcement?

The problems are: Law enforcement is staffed by humans.   The judiciary is staffed by humans. Humans are allowed to vote for the institution that makes the laws. The institution is staffed by humans. This will all eventually change, though I can't decide if it'll be in my lifetime or not...

Help to make diaspora installation one step on debian

I am a podmin and host https://diasporado.org Honestly, Diaspora is a pain to setup. It's easiest to setup on CentOS but it's a Rube Goldberg machine - you've got Ruby on Rails, Unicorn, Redis, nginx, the DB, etc....I mean, just setting up a proper systemd service for start/stop is a pain. I...

    Raspberry Pi owners?

Not to turn this into a blog about Arch on Pogo, but I did get this to work by reverting to the stock firmware, and using the official installation instructions, which is what I should have done the first time. Details if anyone is curious: https://raindog308.com/arch-linux-on-a-pogoplug-v4-a1-01/

    MS Exam 70-533

I like Azure...but admittedly because I get MSDN credits through a work-paid subscription.  People are usually surprised to learn you can run Linux there.  In fact, if you go to VMdepot you can even find FreeBSD images  :D   No OpenBSD yet, alas... It's not my favorite place to host a VPS...

MAID-SAFE (Massive Array of Internet Disks, etc.)

...but people trust companies like Dropbox, Microsoft, Google, etc?    It's kind of a tradeoff.  Yes, with big companies you get some peace of mind that supposedly they're big, professional, audited, etc.  On the other hand, with anonymous encrypted storage you don't have to worry about...

cryptic short domain names, why so popular?

True: Cheap to pickup, but expensive to keep renewing. Squatters will steal the good ones if you're not vigilant.

MAID-SAFE (Massive Array of Internet Disks, etc.)

I'd never heard of this project, but apparently it's been around since 2006 and has raised millions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MaidSafe The technology sounds interesting, though once I read "MaidSafe Coins" I rolled my eyes...
