Seems to me that SL is pretty much the same as Centos, isn't it? You can even convert from one to another in like a minute.

I must say that the firmware revision does not really matter in this case, you would still have to swap the ROM chip.

I have checked our boxes with old drives, no Seagates unfortunately. I would do a search for "donor drives" - you should be able to get what you want no problem. Also make sure you transfer the original ROM to the new board (otherwise it won't work) - some places that sell pcbs will do that for...

In this case I would definitely go with nginx, it will have no problem at all with that kind of load, and its resource usage in this scenario will be close to zero.

I bet nothing is stopping you from stuffing a 4U case with a small switch + as many motherboards, power supplies, etc you can physically jam into it. Just make sure the backplane looks "normal"...
