    VirtualBox

You can say the same for KVM -- upload your VDI and boot straight up, since qemu supports booting from VDI.

    VirtualBox

I mean, you still have to transfer the disk image over, right? And you can boot KVM from VDI just as easily as you can boot a VirtualBox instance from it. Where does the VirtualBox in server environment help?

    VirtualBox

I mean, if that's the only issue, I'm pretty sure qemu/kvm can boot from VDI directly. Is there a particular reason to use VirtualBox over other virtualization platforms in a server environment?

    VirtualBox

You can easily convert VirtualBox images to qcow2/raw images that can be booted on KVM. Why would separate VirtualBox system be needed to provide this?

    rsync - swapping the direction (client/server) - push/pull

Pulling from backup server removes risk of attacker deleting backups but means encrypting the backups is not as useful. I guess you could a) write API thing to take the backup and transfer it to slave or b) push to one backup server and have a second backup server pull from the first :)

Full disk encryption on a KVM VPS?

If it's backups and you don't want to depend on VM for security, then you should obviously perform the encryption external to the VM. But there is almost no reason NOT to do the basic encryption things, since they are so easy to set up nowadays. Only reason would be convenience of you need to...
