Here Gasoline is ~10% cheaper than diesel. Visable (paid by me) vehicle taxes are quite low. The prius itself was $20k USD, paid about $1200 in taxes on it at purchase, no yearly taxes, just tag registration ($20) so it really only comes down to fuel and basic maint for operating costs. Things...

With tax credits and fuel costs, this ends up having a much lower operating cost. I did also look at the TDIs, they had higher insurance premiums, cost about $7k more for comparable features and mileage (mine had 3k miles on it).

My ioping is better than your DD

There in lies the problem of all these "bechmarks" you are only stressing raw i/o output from the most unlikely of realworld scenarios. That is unless your server is specifically used only to run dd's and iopings.

Latency monitoring of common DCs and hosts

It's amazing how much better our smoke(s)look when a router isn't being used ;) http://monitor.tortois.es/smokeping/smokeping.cgi?target=ColoAt.Atlanta

Latency monitoring of common DCs and hosts

Yeah, sales team didn't know any better, that should have been corrected and replaced long ago with our speedtest boxes ;)

    High Availability

That is massively over-complicating what should be a relatively simple setup ;) With Linux-HA you can do failover IP as long as you are contained within a vlan, regardless of what your host does.

    High Availability

Natively? No 6-way master is impossible. You could do it with MySQL clustering, but that is on the commercial product. If you want N-way MySQL clustering and scynronus writes you can check out the Galera project  http://codership.com/content/using-galera-cluster

Latency monitoring of common DCs and hosts

Please contact me about the IP(s) you are using for COLO@ you appear to be using router IP(s) which de-prioritize ICMP and are going to have massively erratic results (as see in the smoke's)
