Setup, configure and Install Varnish Cache server 3.0.5 in CentOS 6.5

Its another tool for your arsenal.. It should not replace other tools you are using.  (For example you'll still want memcached for handling your sessions.) Varnish can have a HUGE impact on a high traffic site.  I love this article...

MySQL on SSD or classic HDD?

We had a client a year or so ago switch from 15k rpm drives to ssd (in both cases, hardware raid 1) for a pretty heavily used mysql database.  The next morning he emailed to let us know he was still picking pieces of jaw up off the floor...  According to him he expected a performance boost but...

    Which location would you choose?

Based off your original post I'd tend to agree with Nett that central US would fare well.  From there you should have similar access to both Europe and Asia. Using that logic though, I'd probably try to make an educated guess where you expect the majority of your traffic to be and centralize...

    Definition of "Cloud"

The NIST document has a section on purpose and scope which states: "provide a baseline for discussion" So their document is not a definition so much as a framework for a definition. Anyhow, based upon everything written in the NIST document, even vanilla no-frills shared hosting is considered...

    Soft Launch: 512MB KVM - $5/mo [Phoenix]

No technical reason why it cannot be done, but as an SPLA provider it is not quite cost effective unless there were a surge in windows interest.   Contact our sales department if you would like further details, but expect the license cost for windows to be more than the VPS. :(

    Soft Launch: 512MB KVM - $5/mo [Phoenix]

Thanks for the feedback.  We are experimenting with different setups.  Do you mind my asking what sort of projects you work on that would require a doubling of storage before you would consider purchasing? Anyhow, to answer your direct question it is hardware RAID 1.   We will also be...

Received $5 from DO for cancelling all my droplets

The goal of course is for people to forget to cancel before they are billed.  Pretty sure even if you are a day late in canceling that DO will not be offering any refunds.....

    Central monitoring

If you have a relatively static IP, you can limit the firewalls and snmp service to your own IP address. Another option, if you leave your ssh connections open to your virtual machines, would be to use ssh tunnels.

    Soft Launch: 512MB KVM - $5/mo [Phoenix]

Yeah, the lookingglass is running off a pretty tired vps node at 100Mbps.  If you'd like a gigabit test, send a PM and we can toss up a file for you to download from a different host. Thanks for checking it out!

How did you come up with your company name?

We sat down with a notepad and filled pages with names.  Then went back and veto'd a bunch, and finally started a voting process. Likewise for domain names.  We had originally started with 'serve.com' and a bunch of ideas based off a gas station motif with 'full.serve.com' for fully managed...

    Looking for cheap dedicated server

I'd be really concerned about the stability of a provider offering anything cheaper.  Even at that rate I'd start to worry as they may not even be covering the basic overhead of space, power and bandwidth at that rate ( to say nothing of networking gear, support staff, etc).

    Impressed by a Celeron!

Do you do on the fly transcoding with Plex on that box? I've got a Core i5 which starts to sputter at about 4-5 simultaneous transcoding streams.   (unRAID)

    Burst.net Using Expired SSL Certificate.

I agree, seems like they've given up.  As for the expired SSL -- it happens.  Even if you get it renewed on time, especially for wildcard certs, some system somewhere slips through the cracks.   Most companies I'd give the benefit of the doubt to on this one.  Burst, otoh, burned through that...

    what if no firewall?

If I manage to get your server to execute some arbitrary code, that's only the first step in compromising your system. Perhaps I cannot get this to escalate to root privileges straight away, or perhaps its just a PITA to work with.  In all likelihood if I can get your system to execute some...

    IP Address usage

Any correlation to the age of the business making the requests?  Just curious. Personally I think its despicable the way providers are handing IPs now.  The ARIN guidelines state valid technical justification is a requirement to IP reassignment.  Yes its easy to make money by not following the...

Requesting photo ID via email OK?

Well variance makes that less than useful.  Their site makes no mention of requiring a license, and I certainly never provided one for my verification: https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=p/acc/seal-CA-unconfirmed-outside Just the two micro deposits to a bank, or two micro charges on a...

What documents does paypal require to be verified? Its been many a moon since I've done it, but iirc alls I had to do to verify a paypal account was confirm two microdeposits to whatever random bank account number I entered onto their site after logging in.  I am not sure how this associated my...
