GlusterFS on the WAN

So let me bounce this off the knowledge here.

Is glusterFS really slow over WANS?

Is there anything that can be done to improve the speeds?

Should I just built more concentrated network spots, instead of diversifying heavily? i,e  ( just NY and SF) instead of (NY, LA, SF, Dallas)?

Any other suggestions?

I personally don't think I would need more then 4MB/s but, it is a tad slow for what I am used to.

Been eons since I mucked with Gluster.

Expecting much performance out of anything --- especially where distance and crypto is involved is wishful thinking in the States.

4MB/s is nothing to sneeze at in a shared environment and where downstream in the el cheapo world of hosting and QoS.

Tried testing your end points with straight network throughput test tool like iperf?   Establish theoretical high transfer speed absent crypto, CPU and other slow down issues.  Then compare to that 4MB/s.
