UK has always been one of the big leaders in censorship.  I doubt that'll change anytime soon.

As an aside - I feel it's unfair to compare countries like UK and US to China.  There are no misconceptions in China about censorship - everyone knows it happens, everyone knows what their govt. is up to.  In America and the other colonies, civilians will believe any lies the TV tells them, and just lap it up.

Truth be told, CN censorship is not much different at all from US/UK.  You're just not fully aware of how deep it goes in your own country.

I am going to crowdfund a trip to the moon and intergalatic laserbeam-internets for all us keyboard-warriors. Give $20 and get a keychain!

Your whining isn't going to change anything is it?

Go and do something if it's such a big issue for you, or are you just trying to look cool?

details woud have helped your post..something like: large UK ISP's are being urged by the UK government to automatically opt their users into an Internet filtering system that will automatically block porn sites, political sites the government deems to be extremist or undesirable, sites that promote drug use or suicide, etc.  Users will have to opt-out of the filtering system if they wish to view these types of sites

a link to a relevant article would also have helped your argument, something like: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-24970283

now that those formalities are done :p , I disagree with automatically opting people into the filtering system but there is a huge difference between the UK government's proposals and Internet censorship in China.  UK users will be able to opt out of the censorship/filtering system but there is no opt-out button for Internet users in China if they wish to view blocked sites.

That's really too bad! I've seen some searches omitted from Google search before for DMCA claims, but am still able to access it in the US.

Would it not be better if it was an opt-in system or such? At least that way people who need or want this filtering (parents/families/etc) can opt in, and the rest of don't need to be bothered?

The opt-out system already exists on (most?) mobile phone providers in the UK, and is annoying when they erroneously flag a website and start blocking it!

At any rate, I thought so far this was just politicians trying to throw a bit of weight around - there isn't actually any legislation that has been drafted yet?
