Need cheap dedicated server in EU

I'm in the market for a new dedicated server to consolidate my two Kimsufi 2Gs and get better performance/storage.

I'm tempted to go for Online.net's Dedibox XC 2015 - 1TB storage, Intel C2750, 8GB RAM, Unmetered Gbit for €20 setup and €16/mo.

My problem with it is that I really want more than 1TB.

I was also looking at one of Hetzner's auctions, which gets me 6TB storage, i7-3770, 16GB RAM, 20TB @ Gbit for ~€40/mo but it's overkill in terms of CPU and RAM for my needs, so ideally I'd get something in between. It'd be great if I could upgrade the HDD in the Online.net offer.

So does anyone do anything similar in the EU? Gbit, 4TB+ storage, 10TB+ BW, under €40/mo.

Note those Hetzner auction prices include 18% EU VAT which you might or might not be subject to (you don't say where you are).  You also like to live dangerously if you want that much data without RAID.  The auction prices fluctuate and the i7-2600 with 2x 3TB drives is usually a euro or two lower than the i7-3770.  If you just want cheap storage, Hetzner has RAID backup plans (ftp/scp/sftp) at 20€/2000GB or 45€/5000GB but you need a Hetzner server to access it (a 4.5€ VPS or 10€ ARM server with them would do it).  The storage and ARM servers have setup fees (= +1 monthly fee) but the ARM server comes with 10TB traffic which is pretty good.

Yep, I've included VAT.

The data is backed up/easily reproduceable so RAID isn't really an issue.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards Hetzner to be honest. The Online.net box's CPU would be plenty, but the storage just isn't enough.

I looked on oneprovider but they work out more expensive than Hetzner.

Dormant VPSB Pathogen
ServDiscount (owned by DC operator MyLoc), you won't get 4TB storage but you'll get 2+ TB storage plus 1Gbps unlimited transfer.  Inventory changes throughout the day: i5-750, i5-3450, i7-860, Opteron 3365 for  $18-28, i7-3770 for under $40,  most with 2 x 1TB storage but sometimes more. No setup fees. Dusseldorf location.

Just run a smart test immediately after getting it if you're buying an auction server.  The drives on some of those ServerBidding auctions have a lot of mileage and a high failure rate, especially the older 1.5TB size and smaller drives.  Luckily they have a 14 day full refund policy.

Cheers, I'll keep an eye on ServDiscount. I've got 3-4 weeks left on my OVH boxes so I can leave it a while before having to make a move.

Yeah, one of the two 3tb drives in my Hetzner i7-3770 box was an almost new Toshiba, but the other was a quite old Seagate with significant SMART errors.  I opened a ticket and they replaced the Seagate drive.

Next thing up seems to be Hetzner SX i7-2600 with 4x 4tb drives for 70 euro plus setup fee.  That's significantly customizable so you can add more drives, hardware raid, etc.  They claim they will start offering customization for the auction servers soon, which might drive prices up.  They have gotten significantly more expensive over the past couple months already too.  The i7-2600 with 2x 3tb has been as low as 28 or so euro  but it's in the 40 range now.

You can checkout OneProvider.com, they are resellers with pretty cheap servers in Paris. They have Intel Xeon L3426 1.86Ghz with 16GB RAM & 2x 2TB HDD for 30 Euros. Also Intel Core i3-530 2.93 with 4GB RAM & 2x 1TB HDD for 20 Euros.

Yeah, I'm kicking myself for not getting one earlier to be honest.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, those only have 100Mbit.

Well if you got it 3 months earlier than you needed it, and saved 10 euro/month, it would take 9 months to pay off the unneeded 3 months, which seems kind of marginal.  I decided against getting a second one back then on similar grounds and am ok without it for now.  I figure better hardware will keep making its way there.

Really you're not going to get much better than 100 mbit in or out of Hetzner.  The gbit port is useful for transferring stuff between Hetzner machines on their internal network.  I believe the external bw is capped at 200 mbit (they mention that somewhere) and it has to be a good day to reach 200, at least across the Atlantic.

True, but I'd have found a use for it, no doubt.

Serverbear results and friends with Hetzner boxes would disagree with you.

Can you point me at a page that says it's capped at 200Mbit? I can't find anything that states this.

If I were you I would reconsider your budget, if you really want dedicated server for yourself. Prices for dedicated server starts by $300. Yes, you can find lower prices but then there is a risk that they are actually sharing one server among multiple clients. Here's a list of best dedicated server providers: http://thememags.com/top-10-dedicated-server-hosting-providers/

This is the biggest lot of nonsense I've read in a while, and spam to boot.
