You don't need to be a UK citizen or resident.  UK companies do need a registered office address in the UK, but if you use a service like CompaniesMadeSimple (the 115-117 St John St London address you see thousands of UK companies using) its about 50 GBP to register a company and get 1 yr of registered office service. http://www.companiesmadesimple.com/company-formation-name-search.html?namesearch=no

Does anyone know of services like that, but for registering in other countries, like US, Canada or even Zimbabwe? Have you used it? Are there any gotchas?

You can use a registered agent to register in the United States. We used 29DollarAgent and it was an easy process. However, they will mail you documents that need your signature and then you'll need to mail them back. It may be possible to do it via fax/scanning, but I don't know.

Every state in the US has its own laws and requirements. You'll need a registered agent for whichever state you register in. Just search "Registered Agent *STATE*" and you'll probably probably find a few.

Tax laws vary by state, as well. Wyoming has no taxes that should affect you and are very pro-business.

There are some risks involved but if you cover all of your bases and make sure you are following the local laws and paying taxes, you shouldn't have any problems.

Can pay an incorporation mill to fill in the blanks.   Reporting and annual fees vary, but you will pay at minimum 2nd years for the agent on your behalf, plus the state's fee.  Taxes may or may not apply [determine such prior to incorporating].

Similar services exist all over the world.  There are tax free non-US countries.   Be prepared to pay in lieu of taxes higher per year fees.

According to Amazon, it's actually about $20 to Z$100,000,000,000,000 (printed in 2009).

Edit: Just so you know, this is no longer the currency Zimbabwe uses. The government uses the USD.
