    Yup fail2ban is a must have. Don't alter your ssh port - that's not save at all. You can - of course do this - but someone brute forcing my ssh normally only doing that and not penetrating any other services. It just depends on the gravity you put into a incident.

    250 Ohm resistor - lowering the noise. Only the digit display is controlled through the shift register, LEDs through digital pins. Yup tty through USB using the serialport gem.
