Output of lscpu on a CentOS OpenVZ Container

So on the node level the lscpu output is fine, but if you try the same command in a CentOS* container, an error is thrown. Then there's a weird thing going on with a couple of the dual L5520s which, using Ubuntu templates, gives an lscpu output displays an incorrect core/thread total (would...

    Favourite TV shows?

Seinfeld ... pretty obvious from the avatar ... and just about everything from the 1980s/1990s. That's pretty much it.  :P

Why are you testing on production?

This has old school business practice written all over it and wins on many levels.  Wish more providers had foresight like this  Saw one very recently, had to be nice, the whole time I was typing I looked like this - http://youtu.be/M8kP3vKaDRE?t=34s   BTW I just realized our signatures are so...

    Hey man, you're getting old.

Sending good vibes your way!  Happy 30!  Always thought you had a few years on me.  Eh, you're the speed limit for city streets in Oregon.  :-)

Good VPS specs for remote desktop?

You'd be surprised at some of the advancements that containerization has made through the years. Not to say that every new feature was met with rave reviews, of course *coughploopcough*. Second to that, OpenVZ is, more often than not, treated as an out-of-box moneymaker, when in fact each node...

Good VPS specs for remote desktop?

I do appreciate this. I don't want stray off topic too long, or go into a GVH-inspired diatribe about wanting to be a part of this industry the day I got my first I.T. job... while that may be true, I tend to demonstrate it this in ... better ... ways. Really over there I'm not allowed to...

Heads up: OpenVZ updates will probably break your system

Good point.  I'll try and get it in before my UK people start their day.  And another thing, why do all of my simfs converted Ploop devices report 4gb less diskspace than when they were spooled with SimFS?  Is that more wasted space somewhere? Also, dumpe2fs isn't going to fire up unless I...

Good VPS specs for remote desktop?

Oops -- I left out that mine are all dual 5650s and dual 5520s. While admittedly used by less intensive containers, I run MATE on the L5520s and haven't had any bottlenecks. Also, ignore the part about Ubuntu and inittab. That's a CentOS thing. Finally, I'd shy away from an E3  for these...

Good VPS specs for remote desktop?

@HalfEatenPie I bet we could have some interesting and fun discussions sometime. I know we've really just favorited one another's tweets on occasion but I'm drawing a blank on where you're located.  Are you within beer-drinking distance of Oregon or Washington?  I want to say Seattle... guess I...

Good VPS specs for remote desktop?

I've spent a lot of time making Remote Desktops function with OpenVZ containers and can get just about anything to run on it.  The screenshots were too big so I uploaded a couple examples. http://johnedel.me/2014/10/14/remote-desktop-on-openvz-container/ So far, I've run these: - Ubuntu 14.04...

Early rumors of a nasty vuln in SSL 3.0

The vuln was just disclosed. http://googleonlinesecurity.blogspot.co.uk/2014/10/this-poodle-bites-exploiting-ssl-30.html

Heads up: OpenVZ updates will probably break your system

Set the diskspace about 35% less as the initial test, it trimmed, then I set it back. I hadn't thought to reset to the same value. I haven't done much with Ploop this summer either.  Frankly, using it takes away from the density and scalability that containers are known for.
