Hardware builds tend to be a competence marker for the host, as well.  There have been quite a few hosts I was interested in signing up with - until learning what hardware configs they were using destroyed my faith in them actually knowing what they were doing. But, to play devil's advocate...

Valid, yes.  Ethical, no.  The only reason you'd want to hide what hardware you're using is to keep your clients from finding out that you have them hosted on shoddy gear.

This isn't a skid forum - we don't trade leaked passwords here.  Take that crap back to HF.

We list our deployments in our Wiki.  A provider not wanting to disclose what hardware they're using means they have a reason to hide it.  And that reason is typically bad news for the client.

@drmike nailed it.  This has nothing to do with security, and is just a bogus move to try and keep VMs spun down to reduce the strain from how tightly packed the nodes are.

Apache's (and most httpds) default user is www-data.  chown -R www-data:www-data /var/www would be your quickest fix.
