How important is the First Time Byte / TTFB?

TTFB isn't on my radar.  It's nowhere near my radar.  As the cloudflare blog entry points out, TTFB is supposedly a test of how long your server took to process the request and create the page, but that's muddled by actual network latency.  It could be used to help figure out where a problem...

JuiceSSH Pro (Android SSH client) free until March 18

https://sonelli.com/500k Requires a Google-hosted email address to get the free Pro key and it takes "2 to 6 hours" for you to receive your key. I haven't actually used JuiceSSH yet, but I hear it's good. And free is always nice.

Kodo Technologies announces HostGuard VPS Control Panel

Thanks.  I will let you (and all other parties interested in Xen) know when I have the packages with Xen support ready.  I am a little behind schedule on getting everything complete for Xen, but I will be working on it all night tonight and over the weekend, and hopefully will have the first...

Share a filesystem (like nfs) across the Internet

I'm with @KuJoe on this one.  NFS over the internet has worked fine, in my experience.  If you're going over the internet, use NFSv4 with kerberos, or NFSv3 with a VPN.  I particularly like tinc for this.  In fact, this is how HostGuard handles sharing ISOs/templates by default - NFS over a tinc...

    LXC 1.0 Released

The biggest advantage that I see in LXC is that all of the features it uses are in the mainline kernel. OpenVZ on the other hand... well, here's the diffstat of the official OpenVZ patch for 2.6.32: 8483 files changed, 3091919 insertions(+), 630842 deletions(-)

    LXC 1.0 Released

http://linuxcontainers.org/news/ LXC 1.0 was released yesterday. Tons of changes, but the most interesting for most of us here is probably support for fully unprivileged containers, which should open the door for hosts to at least begin thinking about actually selling LXC-based VPSes.  In a...

Intel released their newest Xeon E7-8895 v2

I'll take one, plus the entire 1.5TB of RAM that it supports.  Let's see... if you use OpenVZ, you can put 768 containers on a box before you're overselling the RAM. Let's put 10,000 2GB containers per node, at $5/month each... you could break even in about 2 months, factoring in hard drives...

Simple server monitoring - Feedback appreciated (Public beta)

Just signed up because it looks interesting.  I haven't really had a chance to give it a spin, but I noticed one minor thing when logging in that I just had to mention.  When you press TAB after entering your email address, the focus should go directly to the password field.  Right now, it goes...

Kodo Technologies announces HostGuard VPS Control Panel

@qps We're still on track for the end of February for basic Xen support.

Do you use tapatalk for vpsboard/elsewhere?

I have the app, but I don't really use it.  That's moreso because I don't really use forums or anything else while on my phone.  I try to stay away from internet stuff when I'm away from my computer, at least, as far as forums and stuff goes.

    I guess DamnVPS/ThrustVPS got hacked

I'm a former customer, and haven't gotten the email, so I don't think it was a database leak.  Unless they just haven't gotten to me yet, or it just got completely rejected.

    Another movie shooting

Definitely a sad event.  Based on the reports that are available right now, it sounds to me as if the retired cop may have had some kind of psychological issue that caused him to over-react.  Maybe PTSD from being on the force?  He obviously shouldn't not have been carrying. The guy shouldn't...

Kodo Technologies announces HostGuard VPS Control Panel

Yes. An external security audit was performed by Rack911 prior to the initial release.  Internally, every commit is looked over by at least Richard and myself.

    VPN Multiple Servers Together

Tinc doesn't really need a "master", per se - as long as it can connect to one of the hosts on the network, it will get the information about all of the hosts.  But it's definitely useful to set it up with one server containing the config/keys for each host, and have every node just connect to...

    VPN Multiple Servers Together

I like tinc for this purpose.  It's a lot easier to set up than OpenVPN, and it does direct client-to-client communication without passing through the master.

Kodo Technologies announces HostGuard VPS Control Panel

All communication between the Master and the nodes is done over SSH using 2048 bit RSA keys.  User passwords are bcrypt hashed.  We do not store any VM root passwords in the database. In the interest of complete disclosure, we do have to note that there are some sensitive things stored in...

Kodo Technologies announces HostGuard VPS Control Panel

Yes, we use regular LVM fat provisioning.  We felt that the performance benefits of using LVM instead of qcow2 outweighed the benefits that qcow2 brings (particularly the sparse file support).  We also didn't go with thin provisioning because we wanted to eliminate potential sources of problems...

Kodo Technologies announces HostGuard VPS Control Panel

I think I understand the issue better now.  The error about WHMCS is definitely an error - the whmcs-module directory inside the release package (which contains the couple of files needed for the WHMCS module) isn't where the install script expects it to be.  We're re-rolling the package with an...
