The issues that I have with Zopim and LiveChatinc are their cost. It's much much more expensive than it really needs to be.. I could understand $5-10/user/month but $30-200 per month per user is just crazy.

You definately will want a stronger connection, and you will probably not be allowed to host a VPS node on a residential connection. TBH if you are serious, you're probably best of investing in a dedi and starting up in a DC somewhere or doing a colo in a local DC.

This is really interesting, I wonder how long they will phase in this new standard as many sites - specifically older sites - are not on a secure connection. It seems like a huge transition to make, and it seems like lots of people have some SSL certificates to install :)

I know that I personally allow the "Add Funds" option within my billing system, and I know of lots of other providers that also allow it. One reason why providers might be reluctant to offer this is if they are hosting low-end accounts that may be more seceptable to spamming and AUP violations...

Make sure to secure the box. Some of the guide's I've linked to my clients in the past have been this, this, and this. There are plenty of guides around on the interwebz, just need to google what you're looking to do and hope that someone else shared or had the same issue :)

I used purechat for the longest time, and it was great. But now they want to charge me money for what I've had for free for over a year. I'm looking into tawk.to as a free alternative, I'd suggest looking into both tawk.to and purechat.

I think that It's a really interesting concept. It would allow you to (better) utilize nodes. However, It would have to be setup all correctly as aforementioned.
