Anyone have $50 million I can borrow?

Because of the things in this post, never thought they would be top 10 for spam networks. Hilarious.

SSD Caching HDD's with OpenVZ kernel?

flashcache.  Just remember some of these kernel modules (non hardware based solutions) will be slower if your CPU is maxed out due to mutexes/locking.  Personally, you should use a dedicate RAID card that support SSD caching and not some OS based thing. LSI MegaRaids are a good start for this..

Powerline internet adapters - who uses and what is recommended?

Powerline adapters are OK depending on your requirements. I use them for from one room to another for a private vlan with jumbo frames and they work great, I get about 190mbit/s across the LAN with some jitter (due to poor, cheap wiring) However, most newer homes since 2006 have AFCI switches...

    screen at bootup?

IIRC, rc.local won't work because of the tty/devfs system isn't init'd/mounted until after.

The guy was telling people he has his CCIE, I asked him for the IE number, he gave me what appears to be the 1-800 number for dish network. The guy is the ultimate toolbag, that doesn't know shit.

Level3 to Buy TW Telecom for $5.7 Billion

I miss the old days, Exodus, Globix, G.C, C&W, UUNet (pre-MCI days) and others. Hell, even verio had decent ATM stuff back in the day.

How did you come up with your company name?

I came up with the name 'colocrossing' in early 2005 or so, and I bought the domain from NSI (network solutions.) Sadly, the rest is history, and it was transferred off NSI a few years before I was fired from CC.

Best disk storage/raid server setup for VPS host server?

It really depends on the drive, firmware, and controller card. But, you're making a mountain out of a molehill, I know /plenty/ of people who still use SCSI RAID5, and currently, SAS based RAID5 with multiple hotspares.  Earlier versions of RAID6 were total hackjobs and had per vendor specific...

Best disk storage/raid server setup for VPS host server?

There's nothing wrong with RAID5, I've been using it for almost 17 years with my home stuff. I wouldn't mind going to RAID10 but I don't feel like rebuilding my arrays.  You should never consider RAID'ing SSD drives, unless you are prepared for write exhaustion to come early due to parity...

Encoding Audio on ARM CPU Devices

LAME is slow because it has #ifdefs for instructions (if I remember correctly, havent looked at the sourcecode in years) and then it can only do some/most/all of them in software, which makes it slow; In a nutshell,LAME has to emulate instructions in userland, which makes it dogshit slow.  ARM...

Encoding Audio on ARM CPU Devices

ARM lacks certain instructions like XMM so it's doing software based encoding which is an order of magnitude slower. Atoms are x86, ARM doesn't have a lot of ins that x86 has to do multimedia.

Why is there so many different SSL types?

One thing that I've always fought with the IETF since the mid 90s was the use of CAs.. how many of you actually have looked through the CA list? I don't trust them, and neither should you.

should i make a freebsd openvz template?

He shouldn't be in the hosting business if he doesn't know jack shit about the OS.

Too bad if Intel® Virtualization Technology not supported on VPS node?

VT-d has had it's fair share of breakage, too (look at the C1 nightmare errata for SB/X59 chipsets) Personally, VT-d is a good/great idea because of hardware based DMA remapping, per device tlb, and others. (Just make sure you enable IOMMU support in the bios with a page size of 64mbyte)

Benefits and downfalls of running Nginx and Apache side-by-side?

strace data will only log syscalls. it's probably chewing 100% on mprotect or others, or tons of stat()/stat64 calls. You can measure what syscall is taking the most time with the -c flag. Just remember, if php does a mprotect()/mmap() and it returns ENOMEM, PHP /can/ give strange 500 errors...
