ARM device with decent disk performance?

I am developing a crush on Orange Pi.  They have a 2GB of RAM version that might cover all my RAM needs .. and has SATA. Check this out: http://www.orangepi.org/downloadresources/ This folks is what support site should look like for these ARM boards.  Everything tidy in one spot. ...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

Figure I'd try the Ubuntu  installed on this Rikomagic. YouTube HD just won't work.. horrendously overloaded.  Turn it down to 480 and it works, but cores all going freaking busy crazy.  So the video card and acceleration clearly aren't working as shipped.  CPU bound video.  MEH! Searching...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

I'd be wary of the Rikomagic devices.  Not the best track record of shipping software stack that utilizes the hardware. Tronsmart has a similar device if you are interested in USB 3, SATA, larger RAM, etc. Tronsmart Draco AW80 is the model you want to check out. Ubuntu in one review for...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

This box like many of these specs out nice on paper but fails to deliver in Linux as shipped by default.  Sure the upfront base disk speeds looked good. That's where it ends for real world though. Each board seems to have it's own little special oddness.  Ditto for the CPUs on ones like this...

ARM device with decent disk performance?

Here is my speed test on a new Octa Core ARM box.  It has 32GB of disk built into the unit + has USB 3.0 + SATA... root@allwinner:/home/linaro# hdparm -tT --direct /dev/mmcblk0 /dev/mmcblk0: Timing O_DIRECT cached reads: 68 MB in 2.05 seconds = 33.13 MB/sec Timing O_DIRECT disk reads...

For Sale: Verizon 48 Data Centers $2.5 Billion

I love you @DomainBop ! Teramark deal never added up.  People expected a lot post deal and well, for us mortals, nothing seems to have really happened that anyone can point to.  I suspect the assets lingered.

OVH intends to ruin the hosting industry.

This may be.  Heck of a war chest.  Definitely can get milege out of that money.  Credit + bonds have IOUs and paybacks... so it's meh, a bit expensive and risky.  The $163 million and how it is applied could be the story behind most of this.  Expect a chunk of that to be securitized against...

OVH intends to ruin the hosting industry.

Ashburn / DC has probably more DC's than the Silicon Valley.  It's a heavy location with DCs.. and while everyone pretends floor space is all filled, I doubt it there.   There have been a number of big DC builds in past few years. Portland is a bit of a slacker.   I vaguely recall Oregon...

OVH intends to ruin the hosting industry.

I can't see anyone saying 12 new data centers and being honest about it.   These DCs have to be built out in other folks space. As for their locations, the Portland one is going to wreck providers on the West Coast.  Good luck selling cheap like OVH competition. Asia?  I can't see OVH...

Recommendations: Cord Cutter TV Data Powered

Oh I see, Sling now is offering cable channels directly to your device. Interesting, but limited on stations... $20 a month is a bit hefty.

    What's for Lunch?

It won't be Chipotle for me.... First Norovirus that got hundreds sick months ago in California... then another in New England.... Welp, shares have slid massively... Same store sales are off like 30%... Yesterday, the feds announced formal investigation over the poisonings. Then no...

For Sale: Verizon 48 Data Centers $2.5 Billion

Verizon announced it wants to sell 48 data centers it owns.  Asking price $2.5 billion. This is the latest move as Verizon mutilates itself to focus all efforts on wireless. Look for this deal to shake things up, or perhaps it marks the end of the boom in data center sector.

BitCoin in the hosting industry case study... who wants to partake?

Bitcoin is still very niche / limited audience. I read the other day about a Florida city that Bitpay spent a bundle sponsoring a bowl game (football) and enabling retailers to accept Bitcoin.  In a year or less, the town has all but removed Bitcoin efforts and the retailers that bought in...

Recommendations: Cord Cutter TV Data Powered

I'll start with my simple setup here. Roku 2 XS - had it sitting in parts pile unused. Years old, no frills.  Still works too well, I think they have magicians hidden in each Roku. Vizio 24" LCD without apps - no frills 1080p set. Not bad, lots of apps on the Roku, the Roku is like...

Recommendations: Cord Cutter TV Data Powered

I know viewers here are TV heads.  You love that box. Lots has changed in the past few years with platforms, maturity of solutions, TV providers, etc.  Looking for current recommendations on gear that stands out while being reasonable to cheap on price.  Obviously I am a fan of cheap, but...
