    SSL for VPSB?

The most important experiment imho is transferring the same file from the same origin to the same destination, once with encryption and once without it.  It should ideally be a compressed file (mp3/mp4 is fine) so there's no illusory speedup from some gzipping proxy someplace.  I notice that...

    SSL for VPSB?

I'd like to see the evidence that Comcast is causing that, rather than the VPN causing it.  I do get higher speed than that through scp on Comcast all the time.

    SSL for VPSB?

This sounds to me like your VPN is slowing things down.  Could you try the following: 1) Make a 50MB file on some server, and download it through your comcast connection by http 2) then transfer it again by scp or https and post the 2 timings?  I just did this from OVH to my laptop via...

    SSL for VPSB?

I'm on Comcast right now, looking at vpsboard through an ssh tunnel to a socks proxy running on a vps.  SSL sites work fine through that.  I just tried looking at some ssl sites without the tunnel and they work fine that way too.  So I don't see what the problem is.

    SSL for VPSB?

There's no reason for it to be slow.  People use gmail all day long, it's ssl-only, has N million users, and it's at least usably fast.  If this site is slow then it's downloading too much JS bloatware and other crap, and should stop. For example, I see it's trying to inline a bunch of...

    SSL for VPSB?

I don't see any reason to not make it required and siteside, and I think that is preferable to making it optional.  More and more sites just enable it everywhere now.  Better to get rid of the possibility of users leaving it off when they really wanted it on, or of having some attacker somehow...

    Home-grade 4+ bay NAS?

I've had thoughts of getting something like this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16816322004 There are several models and they seem to occasionally appear on Newegg's "deal of the day" at the equivalent of $100 or so.  "Equivalent" means (e.g.) there was frequently a combo...

    Home-grade 4+ bay NAS?

I've also heard good stuff about Synology, but it's big and expensive enough that I figure, why not just use a PC?  That gives more flexibility about OS's, security, disk encryption, etc.  So far though, I've just bypassed the whole NAS thing and have most of my storage-intensive stuff on...

    lightweight browsers?

I actually still use Lynx all the time, and occasionally the slightly fancier Links, but I figure you mean a graphical browser.  I used Dillo for a while though I don't know if it's actively maintained any more.  The trouble is that the modern web has become completely dependent on bloatware...

(BETA TESTING) 256mb IPv6-only OpenVZ in Los Angeles for $1/month!

If anyone missed my lowendspirit review, it may be of interest: http://vpsboard.com/topic/339-lowendspiritcom-from-inception-hosting/ Summary: I like it a lot, and the NAT IPv4 feature is IMHO quite important. I know Anthony would like to work with other providers to offer more servers under...

What vps do you have and what are you doing with them?

Lowendsirit VPS are real VPS and they are great if you don't need specific IPv4 ports.  My review is here: http://vpsboard.com/topic/339-lowendspiritcom-from-inception-hosting/ They have more recently announced some kind of shared hosting product that's separate from the VPS line, but I...

What vps do you have and what are you doing with them?

Oh man, I have about 10 VPS which are almost all idle (one gets regular use as a VPN, a few others get less frequent use,  one is used for storage, and one (Prometeus 128MB KVM) is idle on purpose just so I can admire its uptime (currently 525 days)).  But they are all relatively cheap (3 of...

Market Research - KVM Pricepoint. What would YOU want to pay?

I'd suggest a pure SSD option.  Most of my stuff either runs in small servers (128MB) or else is too CPU-heavy for VPS's and needs massive amounts of storage (TB's not GB's).  If I think of 512MB-1GB KVM servers, that evokes midsized database applications, like vpsboard.  Those are...

IPv4 Shortage, Blame Idiots like ColoCrossing.

I tried to post a question on Wikipedia through my VPN.  It said: Your IP address has been blocked on all wikis. ... The reason given is Cross-wiki spam: spambot: leaky webhost; too much spam — ColoCrossing; talk to provider about contacting the stewards. Heh.

(Request) Budget Dedicated Servers in Fremont, CA (HE)

HE is pretty cheap for the bay area.  I have a friend paying 500/mo for a full rack, though with just 15A of power, and relatively little bw and ip's.  I had been thinking of parking a box with him but ended up getting some OVH dedis that are easier to deal with than wrangling a colo box around...

OVH - new website and new rules

    1. The current OVH.us web site looks about what I'm used to for the past 6 months or so. 2. The new "PE" line is PE1 (3.4 ghz 2-core Intel i3, 8gb ram, $29/mo) and PE2 (2.66 gbz 4-core W3520, 24gb ram, $59/mo).  Both come with 1x 2TB disk and 5TB/mo bandwidth.  The PE1 seems attractive if you...
