What is it? I only read "Wireless activity tracking-device". Why on earth would one want to spend money on that?

The wristband operates as a pedometer, sleep monitor and watch.
This isn't some type of GPS device like you were eluding to.  A lot of people already use similar products, there are some made by Garmin for example.  It is mostly for health nuts and those interested in tracking their heart rate/sleep for other reasons.

My friend is trying to lose weight and bought the Flex wristband to use in conjunction with the My Fitness Pal app. It's for lifestyle/health purposes and not to track what you're doing/where you're going a la NSA.

Fair enough. Still doesn't really seem all that useful to me, if you are a pro athlete I'm sure there are better alternatives?
