Looking to get off the freemail train

I've been using gmail as my primary email service for a few years now and I'd like to move to either a privately hosted email service or a private mail server.

I'll be getting a 512MB VPS from DO in a bit, any tips for running your own mail server, and overall difficulty of it?

Getting things setup is generally pretty easy. I found the most difficult part was getting the email to deliver properly (not being put in spam or rejected) with all of the main mail hosts like Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo.

Here's an article that helps solve that problem: http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2010/04/so-youd-like-to-send-some-email-through-code.html

Other than that I'd experiment with some all in one solutions like Zimbra, Atmail, iRedMail, zPanel, and cPanel.

Decided I'll start using my cPanel production VPS for my mail services until I have a dedicated service for it.
