We saw some other hosting providers distribute their coupons (promocodes) through Adwords and were thinking of doing the same. It would be along the lines of an adwords-only coupon to track effectiveness. Has anyone done something similar?

Just make the landing page for the ad a embeded 'promocode'
It would be more effective than having them hit the landing page and then remember to enter a code.

I'd say what @SPINIKR-RO said.
Create a landing page for that specific advertisement. Also use analytics software like piwik or something to see where they're going from there (or to see who gets on to that page to begin with).
