VPSB PodCasting

So I've had this idea for awhile now and was just wondering what kind of interest was around in the community. I always liked podcasts as they are a great way to stay on top of news and new technologies on the go.

So the question is would anyone like to see a podcast put together by the VPSB Community? The idea is to keep it community driven where we would have guest speakers from the community and the topics would range from web hosting, server management, managing and business, and other topics as we see fit. This could be a weekly to bi-weekly or even monthly or we could have multipul podcasts each covering a different area or topic.

Anyway, figured I would throw the idea out there and see what interest there might be.

You need some good equipment to publish a good podcast.

This community does have a wide range of topics to discuss so I would not stick to one topic for a podcast.

And you need enough people that want to talk into a mic that is recording all the stuff they say.

Not talking about listening to about 1.5 hours of recordings to get the 20 minutes of good content and conversation.

Not to mention editing, cutting audio, and making sure it's all smooth from start to finish. Can take hours to complete that.

First of all.

I love this idea.  My only minor issue is that we'll need content.  We'll have some good content to talk about early on but once we get a good speed going it's easy for us to hit too many topics at once.

Back in High School we ran a non-profit radio station out of grant money and had other high school students run their own radio shows.  Within a few months a ton of those guys were out of ideas to talk about on their shows, and a good portion of our show hosts ended up just playing music and joking in between sessions.

So in terms of podcasts...  Awesome.  I'm all for it.  I'd love to have each sessions starting from the very basics of server administering to lets say software debates (e.g. Observium vs OpenNMS?  OpenNMS is a fork of Observium, but is it really that better?  Or maybe how to use Puppet/Chef properly?).  Basically focus on more of the higher level content.  This of course means more time spent on initial research and actually organizing debate points.  Getting a guest to come in and talk (or just a collection of people we rotate out every show who discuss about this and that with the hosts).  Hell remember that Bitcoin thread we had?  Maybe organize it in a more clean-cut manner and have an entire episode about that.  Who knows.

Bottom line, it's a great idea.  If we want to put it through post-production (e.g. editing, cutting audio, all that jazz) it's going to be pretty damn time intensive.  But if we want to do it bare-bone no cutting and all live-esque, well then we'd need pretty personable hosts who can also keep a conversation going in a very entertaining and natural way.

If we can get all that done.  Then holy crap this would be amazing!!!

I'm totally in with helping out on this.

Sounds like a good way to spend some free time.

I was contemplating doing a similar project a while back.

Found the segment to be blah.  Going to be hard pressed finding people that will say much of value.

People that are knowledgeable will be either too busy or fearing giving away secrets or coming across as less than super hero like (speaking of company owners).

You will end up with many of the same companies that have professional blabber already clogging up the process.

Mind you, that's addressing the business side of things with emphasis on VPS market and related shared hosting schemas.

Not trying to discourage, just noting obvious pitfalls.

I contacted some community members informally way back when and they were kind of no and weird similarly about self promotion / going on tape.

It can be done and frankly, I'd lend a hand.

This is a good idea, but IMHO continuity would be a problem when we don't have enough community contributors who have time to create and load vpsboard standardized content.

To be honest, I am reluctant to speak in front of a microphone and listening to my own voice. It's kinda weird

Haha.  Everyone says that about themselves the first few times.  Don't worry you'll get over it and it'll be fine!

In terms of content contributors, I'd say this is one of the ways to get the initiative started to get that ball rolling some more.

I'm just hoping that someday vpsBoard may publish some sort of magazine in .pdf or other electronic format containing news, tutorials, test results, and obviously deals (adds) from verified providers.

It may take quite an effort, but I'm willing to subscribe for $12/year for 12 editions of 15-20 pages bulletin 20% adds 80% content.

@TruvisT sorry for derailing your topic, but this idea suddenly pops up when you propose the PodCasting idea. Thanks to you.

No problem. I like that idea as well. I love content and am tired of so many publications going bias and ads. I would love to see a content team publishing as well.

As far as all the ideas mentioned above. Lots of good points made. Personally, I would enjoy the opportunity to talk about Windows Server 2012, Linux and even some other subject matters. Lots of potential for sure. Just a matter of finding the dedication and exactly how we want to do this. =)

Thanks for your understanding, mate. I think you should discus this with @MannDude, @HalfEatenPie and @MartinD and do some brainstorming to realize the idea.

Oh man.  I'd totally be down in reading (and/or talking) about Windows Servers.  Like I'd totally ask you like millions of questions if I could (and I previously have).

Honestly, I love the idea. Although worried it might be a bit difficult to get off the ground (long-term speaking).  Anyways I'd love to continue brainstorming this and refine the idea!

Also, I love your magazine idea.

We can start small within a small group, as I already seen many helpful friends here that are really tech savvy and have the ability to convey ideas across.

I'm all for it, could discuss recent events and offers. Why not do reviews too?
