A cousin (who also works in IT) asked my wife, "do you think your husband would want this?"

"Probably," she said.

A couple hours later, I'm pulling it out of the van.  

48-port HP ProCurve 8000m.  Only bummer is that all the ports are 10/100 - no gigabit.  

Haven't turned it on yet...

But yeah.  I recommend you use it as a space heater for the coming winter months!

The switch has 80 ports, actually. It is old but technical specifications are still good. Backplane speed is 3.8 Gbps, each port has 512KB buffer, all the essential features are here, pre-owned gigabit/fiber modules are easily sourced from ebay. Not so useful anymore for general computing requirements, still enough for VoIP or thin client connections. It probably works, that line of switches was sturdy. You can resell it on ebay and get 150-300$.
