    Yikes.  Stereotyping much? >_>

Opera - great but privacy sucks

That's the self-hosted Firefox Sync (aka Weave) I was discussing in another thread.  Many browsers have this capability.. Firefox/Iceweasel is the only one I've found so far that lets you easily do it yourself without having to rely on their servers.

Removing 3rd Party "Spyware" from vpsBoard

Always awkward when asking the mum about anal tics. >_>

Opera - great but privacy sucks

In the spirit of 'fighting the man' however.. wouldn't taking one of their tools (say.. Android) and ripping out what they actually wanted to put out there (GPS tracking/etc), leaving yourself with a fully functional device you have complete control of, courtesy of 'the enemy', actually be a...

    Falling off the Grid

Heh, I hardly ever use 'cloud' type deployments for actual filesharing/etc.  I originally tried Owncloud to see if it handled RSS (before finding TTRSS), and ended up keeping it after I found out about Contact/Calendar sync. You're already running Owncloud - so pretty much all you need is...

Opera - great but privacy sucks

Iceweasel is an 'alternative' in that Debian refuses to package out anything other than FOSS by default.  Given that Firefox is also Open Source (but not FOSS), I have no problems with using it.  I have full control over the browser, I can check and compile source myself if I'm worried about...

    Android Folks

Correct, though I worked on the assumption that anyone with enough knowledge to force improper firmware without breaking the phone would also know to simply switch off the radio from the OS :P

why manually approving reverse dns is a good idea

One thing that always makes me laugh is certain hosts used to shittalk so much about how strict our policies are... and now it seems that just about everyone is using policies I implemented years ago :P (Not a dig on you neno; just an amusing observation in general :3)

    Android Folks

There was a guide on XDA for this awhile back.. I'll have to go dig for it as I don't recall the steps offhand. But tl;dr - flash a radio firmware that physically works on the phone, but is incompatible with the phone "carrier" network. A good example is the old HTC Touch Pro 2s. AT&T...

Falling off the Grid, Mk. II

So, Firefox lets you sync your browsing data, right? Tabs, history, bookmarks, all that jazz. Hosted on Mozilla's sync servers. Weave is Mozilla's alternative for people that want to host the data themselves. Full browser sync, but I'm the only one that can access the data. EDIT: Here's the...

Falling off the Grid, Mk. II

In this thread I discussed my growing dislike of services that collect personal data, and the steps I've been taking to move away from them all. I've had a few requests to elaborate on the setups I use, so I figure I'll lay that out here then step off to let you guys share your own setups as...

    Falling off the Grid

Pretty much. I've got everything running smoothly now.. perhaps this weekend I'll put up my deployment layout, and maybe do a couple guides for folks wanting to do the self-host thing as well (contacts/calendar/email/sync/'drive'/etc).

    Yet Another SolusVM Alternative: VPSM

I really want to say something here... but I'll be nice. Sorry KuJoe, instinct told me to warn you against working with him (and another person).. but figured he might do better on a second chance. Ended up being a bust =\

    Falling off the Grid

Out of curiosity, I gave ISPConfig a try. A quick --purge later, I decided to just stick with a postfix/sasl/dovecot manual setup. Thanks for the suggestions though folks; I did see a few recommendations that look rather interesting for some unrelated project ideas.

I've seen more of that in my time in the US than anywhere else in the world, actually.

    Falling off the Grid

Where's that 'Fuck You' button >_> Thanks for all the suggestions folks... even if only a handful were the actual panels I was asking about :P  I suppose I'll just stick with the ol' manual setup for now.

    Falling off the Grid

Looks fairly nifty... is this something self-hosted, or do you have to use their services? (To clarify, I'm doing self-hosted at BuyVM obviously.. Fran and bz are family, and I know for certain that my stuff there is private.) I'm leery about using hosted solutions outside of my own home and...

    Falling off the Grid

Over the past couple of months, I've been slowly moving all of my services that were previously hosted by third parties (Google, etc) on to self-hosted solutions. Partially to be more cost effective, and primarily due to just how invasive some of these services are becoming. I think the straw...
