    East Coast DDOS Filtering

Lure them in Fran :)   Then maybe their failed venture can blackhole their wanna-be VPS business too with the high oversold and mismanaged nodes :) I am game for giving the new filtering a try when becomes available.   But, I detest Buffalo and having to use the service there. What's the...

    Woodworking

Tables, desks, etc. at this stage should be mainly hardware store visits to buy your wood.   Circular and jigsaw are your two big tools for cuts. Lots of wood glue and fasteners :) It's getting real pricey and hard to find good aged wood.  Amazed by what Lowes and Home Depot are selling folks...

    Woodworking

I am no carpenter or furniture maker. I'd buy a good gas chainsaw for long term use and harvesting your own timber.   There are rather cheap sawmills out there on Ebay $200~.   They take a chainsaw usually at that price point for cutting trees into lumber.  Pretty useful, especially for a guy...

INIZ Launches New OpenVZ.IO Locations in New York City & Los Angeles

Overselling is part magic and part luck.  Some folks have good idea about their customers and where they can push things @jarland for example.  BuyVM performs magic too. Everyone else, varies greatly.  When in doubt, don't do it too much :)

    East Coast DDOS Filtering

$3-6.... Will it really make any difference?  The market certainly will bear the amount anywhere in that range.  Why?  Lack of alternatives and... it's cheap.

INIZ Launches New OpenVZ.IO Locations in New York City & Los Angeles

It all depends on your customers and their use of the service. 3 to 1, seems like a normal guess at what you can get away with in most environments. I wouldn't want any ratio even that high with active big RAM gamers.   Web stuff, well that's hit or miss.  Most of it is idle and unused except...

INIZ Launches New OpenVZ.IO Locations in New York City & Los Angeles

That's a good company / network last time I was on it. Upstreams certainly aren't what you typically see in this market segment.  Hopefully folks notice that and give it a try.

I am both lazy and stupid. NYC ehh? What facility and what bandwidth upstreams?

    Single homed VPS

The server in your home office. Surely there must be single homed Cogent providers. PrismaVPS isn't single homed.  They are on WSI's network and I believe using their bandwidth upstream mix (were when I was still using them a few months back). Directspace, oh the horror.  Don't do that.   But...

ChicagoVPS / CVPS Hacked. New SolusVM exploit? [PT 2/2]

CVPS is just sitting, waiting and fattening up. How many new SSD servers will we discover come next hack :) ? He can pay for development surely.  It being secure, well, that's asking a lot of most programmers.  Better hire / outsource a real audit too.   We are talking fairly big collective...

[Industry Question] How Do You Pay Support Staff?

BuyVM is my favorite.  Paying in Russian Vodka :)  Hey I know drunks then end up that route normally.  Makes me want to employ them and then own the local pub too. No one is paying in food vouchers, tacos, etc. :) ?

Man beats bank on their own game

That's funny.   Do they actually include post paid anyting that actually could be affixed to a box?  I don't mess with the postal service since it exposes you to federal laws and punitive actions for misdeeds.

Ideas -- How to "route" DNS traffic through multiple daemons

That will work but get mighty complex for end users following a tutorial.  I will probably try it out locally  for my testing though.

Where do you think the best possible location for a VPS to be?

Best location is lowest latency to end customer while also having great upstreams with low latency to key peering for that region. Places like New York (CITY), Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Seattle, San Francisco are popular due to availability of many fiber options and tons of networks and the...

[Industry Question] How Do You Pay Support Staff?

In the USA, the IRS dictates who and what is a contractor.  It's a truly abused and muddied area by many employers / companies. There is no limit on the duration of contract that turns the person into an employee. Instead, in determining employee or contractor status there are certain jobs...

[Industry Question] How Do You Pay Support Staff?

People get funny about money and disclosing any details of their corporation :) I know IPXCore was shopping for support folks on a per ticket basis in the past month or so on here.  That was top level support to field incoming tickets and handle the RTFM or delegate to someone else with...

European Servers may be an option?

Mind you, there is tons of info from the recent Snowden alleged disclosures and the details of the various spy programs individually. For each US program, you can bet counterparts abroad have a similar program. When you start talking about exchanges like say LiNX,   the US is sniffing mass...
