Web Devs - How do you host your clients?

I still need to get a Pi.  Been using the pogoplugs and related plugs for years.

What are you listening to right now?

I'm listening to CoasttocoastAM.  Tonight is a gal speaking about the lingering recession and later on another fellow speaking about the Nephilim. Us seniors love our AM talk radio :)

Web Devs - How do you host your clients?

Awesome stuff @wlanboy!  Good to see different type of usage/development.  Hopefully we are entering a time of more hobbyist hardware and hardware interfacing.

Should I compile Nginx from source or just use the version in the Debian repo?

Using Dotdeb is very simple: 1. Add the main repository to your sources.list Depending on your distribution (Wheezy or Squeeze), add these two lines to your /etc/apt/sources.list file (you can also choose a mirror near you) : deb http://packages.dotdeb.org wheezy all deb-src...

Doesn't HE offer a public free tunnel thing?   @Francisco

Should I compile Nginx from source or just use the version in the Debian repo?

Right :) @mikho.  The regular one is what most docs/tutorials say.  So lacking the additional modules. Benefits of using the lesser module heavy versions should be reduced memory consumption and better static throughput--- maybe. New versions, especially source give you cutting edge and often...

Good link there @eva2000 nice comparisons.

Is there a GUI tool to copy data between servers?

Tons of rsync tutorials out there.   Probably are dozens of rsync GUIs to wrap it up and make it easier.  Good for experimenting with at first. Get very familiar with rsync and scp and life will be greater.   Authors of both packages deserve a massive thank you.  Both are used all over the...

Email Provider Recommendation - dedicated email or Cpanel

No Microsoft if I omitted them.  Cut from the same dirty rags they are :) Fusemail looks very interesting for some projects.  First time I've seen them.  Thanks @wlanboy. Still looking for more recommendations.

Email Provider Recommendation - dedicated email or Cpanel

Yes, I have a fleet of idle VPSes waiting for some good use :) I am rather short on time and patience to handle a public facing mail server that just has to work right now.

Should I compile Nginx from source or just use the version in the Debian repo?

I'll never get this right, but I think using Nginx repositories for new versions gets you a leaner version (plus newer). By leaner, it has less addons/plugins/whatever they call the wizbang features that aren't the barebones version.   For instance, the location/IP to location functionality...

Email Provider Recommendation - dedicated email or Cpanel

I have a need for a "real" email service.  Looking for recommendations. Requirements: Seeking a general purpose email service to connect to desktop clients, tablets and mobile devices. IMAP/POP3/SMTP/web interface 25GB or much more for longer term storage 10 domains to provider email for...

So @wlanboy, what sort of client work is it that you are doing instead of the blog stuff?

    Would you buy owncloud space?

I actually like dedicated single task/function for some of the services I buy.  A VPS is a playground often and things can/will get hosed.  Enough updates and patches out there that do break things. Sometimes much nicer to let a provider deal with all the hadrware and software layer while I...

    Best free DNS hosting?

The problem I have with DNS as a billable item is it can quickly get out of control.  I've had unexplained bursts in DNS lookups to the tune of 10's of millions a month above "normal".   If you were for instance to have someone spidering, mirroring, etc. or a DDoS style attack where lookups...

[Backupsy] 500GB for $7/month at new location Buffalo, NY!

Interesting service. Been waiting to hear about other folks liking or disliking the service and what is tolerated running on this.  Of course rsync is fine, but how about audio recorders for archiving? (capturing a http stream from remote)

tw telecom just like Time Warner Cable is a weird company. tw telecom was formed in 1993 between US West and Time Warner Communications. Unrelated?  I guess, they had their own IPO party. Peering shows: http://bgp.he.net/AS4323#_peers 27 Time Warner Cable Internet LLC  ...

Is there a GUI tool to copy data between servers?

Yeppers, what @wlanboy said there.  Sweet and simple. Works alarmingly well.  Tons of command line options and dry run/testing recommended before running against live data.

    Would you buy owncloud space?

I think a low cost service like Backupsy (minus the CC network) that had OwnCloud installations would be super. I've been looking at OwnCloud for a while, but haven't found the time to spend with it to see if good fit for any of my needs. Of course throwing it behind SSL by default and taking...

Web Devs - How do you host your clients?

I host clients on my own dedicated servers. They either have their own dedicated server or are on a VPS on the servers I own. Depends on their needs where they end up.  Big projects and those with security/clearance/similar requirements are dedicated servers.  Everyone else, unless a large web...
