Scaleway Cloud Launches x86-64 C2 Servers: Dedicated Avoton C2550 and C2750

Holy cow Drmike, thanks for those ebay links, it's tempting to buy some of those and colo them.  Where's the security issue with the pseudo-IPMI if you're on a routed ethernet port?  Passmark has been a very good estimate of actual performance for the stuff I've been doing, basically...

Scaleway Cloud Launches x86-64 C2 Servers: Dedicated Avoton C2550 and C2750

Scaleway, Hetzner, and that WSI E5 cost roughly the same per passmark, the difference is that Scaleway bills hourly, making it tempting to spin up ten Scaleways instead of 3-4 E3's or 1-2 E5's for a short period (few days or whatever) instead of running your task a lot longer on fewer monthly...

Scaleway Cloud Launches x86-64 C2 Servers: Dedicated Avoton C2550 and C2750

EC2 used to have bad NN problems unless you used very big instances, in which case it was merely incredibly expensive.  I don't know if it's better now, but they've introduced a cpu-time accounting system where you get a certain amount of CPU credit for each hour you pay for on the instance, up...

Scaleway Launches Native IPv6 and IPv6 only 1.99/mo

Is ipv6 available for the C1 servers now?  There was some technical obstacle to that earlier.  C1's with no internet (reachable only from other Scaleway servers through LAN) have been available for 1.99/month for a while and I figured the 1.00 charge for internet connectivity was partly for the...

Scaleway Cloud Launches x86-64 C2 Servers: Dedicated Avoton C2550 and C2750

Certainly people build businesses around AWS all the time, where EC2 basically amounts to overpriced VPS.  I think the most important thing is eliminate SPOFs.  Multiple servers from multiple vendors in multiple locations, etc.

Scaleway Cloud Launches x86-64 C2 Servers: Dedicated Avoton C2550 and C2750

One of the ingredients of Scaleway was supposed to be an S3-like object store at .02/GB/month, triple replication, and no bandwidth charges.  It got oversubscribed instantly (people seemed to be using it as a CDN) and so it's been unavailable to new customers for the past 5 months or so while...

Scaleway Cloud Launches x86-64 C2 Servers: Dedicated Avoton C2550 and C2750

I don't think Scaleway is that solid right now.  It's a cool product but it feels like something in beta test.  There will probably also always be hardware shortages.  That said I'm getting more and more paranoid about how to do HA, so would want to spread critical services across multiple...

    Crissic making a return

Yeah I'm tempted to buy a prgmr vps just as a thumbs up, but I don't have any use for it and prgmr is a small enough shop that Luke would probably notice and wonder what went wrong if I cancelled a few months later. On the disappointing side, he seems to have stopped offering dedi and colo...

    cheap vps near San Francisco

Heh, I didn't realize that stuff about Edge. One I forgot is prgmr.com (Santa Clara) which is now priced competitively with DO, Linode, etc. though not hourly billing.  A bit too high-end for the minimal thing I want at the moment, but I'll certainly consider them if I need a more serious VPS...

    Crissic making a return

Wow, I just looked at prgmr.com pricing and they've dropped a ton, so they are competitive with DO/Vultr now (though monthly billing).  Pretty cool.  They were much higher til fairly recently.  The new Crissic offer could in principle be an IP laundering scheme, but if they claim to be selling a...

    cheap vps near San Francisco

Yeah, DO is a possibility ($5/mo but hourly billing so I could spin it up and down as needed).  But when I tried to sign up with them they asked me to send a selfie photo of myself holding my passport.  I told them that was too invasive and didn't go through with the signup.

OVH Manager unavailable (96 hours and counting)

I just logged into FR and it worked ok for me.  If you're getting sent back to the login page, make sure your browser is sending a referer header.  I usually disable that header but have to turn it back on for OVH login.

    cheap vps near San Francisco

Thanks, yeah, 10/yr was optimistic, 20 isn't too bad, and 25/year for KVM is almost reasonable.  I had forgotten EGI's vps brand was edgevm so looked at their old page at egihosting.com.  Glad they're still around.

    cheap vps near San Francisco

Looking for cheap VPS physically close to San Francisco, the closer the better but no more than 50 miles.  That means San Jose, Fremont, Santa Rosa, are ok but LA is too far so don't suggest it.  Low resources are fine: 64MB ram, 2GB disk, traffic will usually be under 10GB/month but might be...

Online.net: RIP Dedibox SC ! (Fin du support Q3-2016)

Seems ok to me by the standards of cheap VPS.  Nothing spectacular.  That's getting across the atlantic to here though, and none of the cheap european hosts have been great at that.  I'll running some tests when I get a chance.  I only have a C1 right now, but have been wanting to try a C2.

Online.net: RIP Dedibox SC ! (Fin du support Q3-2016)

Nyr, if you don't need much storage, you can seed from a Scaleway. FM7, that's interesting, it hadn't occurred to me that the Scaleway DC might have different connectivity than the other online.net DC's.  Scaleway is the only one I've used, and so far only lightly.  I'm mostly in it for cpu...

    Hardware Monitoring System?

Manually examining the output would get annoying after the second or third time, especially if you have multiple servers.  You need a program to monitor the relevant parameters and alert you if something goes wrong.  It shouldn't be complicated though.  It's mostly a matter of deciding what...

It's impressive how bad Crissic got when Quadranet took over

Mine is working mostly fine, and currently reports 67 days uptime.  Network has generally been ok to very good.  Main annoyance for me is that the disk i/o is sometimes very slow (too much seek contention probably).  It could also be that memory is oversold, but I'm not noticing this since I...
