Are You Still Grunting Away or Gulping the Koolaid

From their site: Two snarky comments: 1. I guess IE can't sort.  Though that's kind of appropriate in a way. 2. My Chrome says it's version 32.  Version 16 is from 2011...? Those nitpicks aside, looks interesting.

Q4 2013 Lowendtalk Top Provider Poll Results

I think this was pretty meaningless when it was at LET. Why? No real criteria Providers with more geographical coverage get more votes No validation that voters are even customers Only qualification to vote is having a LET account - and anyone can have an unlimited number of them.  (Don't talk...

NinjaHawk Purchased By One of the Giants* of the VPS Industry

My God, it'd be BuyVM with just Aldryic and Anthony!  Scary! But seriously...this analysis is spot on.  I'd argue that price really doesn't matter once you're in the "lowend" tier.  It's all about reputation and secondarily geography.

NinjaHawk Purchased By One of the Giants* of the VPS Industry

Ninja Hawk was an actual corporation.  Not that that means much, but... http://appext20.dos.ny.gov/corp_public/CORPSEARCH.ENTITY_INFORMATION?p_nameid=4334229&p_corpid=4333443&p_entity_name=ninja%20hawk&p_name_type=A&p_search_type=BEGINS&p_srch_results_page=0

NinjaHawk Purchased By One of the Giants* of the VPS Industry

I'd watch that show. Technically, of course, to flip you'd have to buy a VPS company and then sell it for profit, but even a reality show featuring summer hosts would be Must Watch TVtm. Maybe next could be Iron Host Faceoff - talk five kids, give them $100, and see how long they last in the...

NinjaHawk Purchased By One of the Giants* of the VPS Industry

Ah, I didn't know someone had merged them. Lean is the Toyota stuff. Six Sigma is GE's stuff. The Six in Six Sigma refers to statistics (error levels), not "six steps" that TMZ made up. Regardless, it's all management fad stuff.  In my not-so-humble opinion it has a lot more relevance in...

NinjaHawk Purchased By One of the Giants* of the VPS Industry

This was an epic read: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1242498 First time I've ever seen a hosting owner say "look how huge we are - here's a pic of a check we got!"

NinjaHawk Purchased By One of the Giants* of the VPS Industry

He probably purchased some advertising and all was forgiven :-) Does TMZ seriously have such a large operation that:  "After months of searching for a new location, we found one about 10 minutes from were we currently are. After months of renovating, buying furniture, moving furniture around...

    Red Hat, Inc Aquires CentOS

I semi-disagree. Two different Fortune 500 companies I've worked for use it extensively, particularly for dev/test stuff.  In a lot of cases, if you're running prod on RHEL, you might do test/preprod on RHEL and dev on CentOS.  Or if you want a "every developer has a sandbox" sort of thing...

    Red Hat, Inc Aquires CentOS

I'm sure RedHat wouldn't attempt to seduce CentOS just to kill it. No, I'm sure that would never happen.

Robert Clarke DDoS'd Brings the Internet Down...

Robert Clarke... I seem to recall him as someone on LET who was 16 and wanted to start a VPS hosting company.  He was marginally better than, say, DepotVPS_Shane and some of the others.  But there was some drama I didn't follow. What's the summary version of The Robert Clarke Story: Tonight on...

To Phone or not to Phone

Not quite accurate. In some states, it's legal as long as one party (e.g., you) consents the call is being recorded.  The other party can even be ignorant the call is being recorded.   In other states (a minority), all parties must consent. ...

SecureDragon Changes Up Their Bandwidth Pricing

Aw, no more 32MB or 64MB plans. Then again...whenever I had one I inevitably upgraded it.  They're good for VPN though. I liked the nerdiness and retro feel of a tiny VPS but...I guess times have changed.

    Project management & team-collaberation software?

I've never found anything that was easier to use than hosted solutions. Code your own?  Would take months/years to replicate what you can buy for $10/month.  If the first part of launching a project is writing project management software...I'm not sure what that says about your dedication to...

    Jean Claude van Who?

Some of you may have been impressed by Jean Claude van Damme's "epic split":   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7FIvfx5J10   However, Chuck Norris was not:   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFJeaAq5Mv4

    BlueVM Leaving Kansas City

These sorts of moves always strike me as grossly unprofessional: 48 hours from now, your VM is being moved We've decided to move it to Texas Oh, and we're giving you a new IP Oh and there will probably be some downtime.  Sorry 'bout that! I suspect there's nothing in the TOS (which is a...

    Securing VNC (fail2ban?)

That worked great.  Thanks! But one followup question...if I nmap my public-facing internet address (eth0's address) I see: Host is up (0.000049s latency). Not shown: 996 closed ports PORT     STATE SERVICE 443/tcp  open  https 873/tcp  open  rsync 6001/tcp open  X11:1 (SSH is on a high...

    Securing VNC (fail2ban?)

Months later...finally getting around to this :-) So I did some googling and haven't found an guides on setting this up going from a Windows client (VNC viewer) to a Linux host.  The Linux side is pretty straightforward as far as listening on localhost, but the Windows client side (tunnelling)...

    Bing using CloudFlare?

I use it because Microsoft pays me to use it. $120 in Amazon gift certificates and counting. As soon as they stop paying people to use it...I'm gone.

Digital Ocean Opens Another Amsterdam Location

Sometimes the only thing you can do is copy, paste to a text editor (e.g., Notepad), then recopy and paste back to the forum to nuke the formatting.
