Useful phone apps for server monitoring?

I do something similar to @trewq, with a short script I wrote on a cron reading from my existing monitoring and pushing notifications via Pushbullet. Edit: it should be relatively simple to integrate any of these types of services with most self-hosted monitoring systems, e.g. Nagios/Icinga.

SpamVPS, the industry leading 2GB for a peso brand BBB

Given the number of times this particular "mistake" has happened, don't you think it's about time you put in place some sort of procedure regarding sending mass emails to avoid it happening again?

Need DDoS Protection on my Website

Some companies see DDoS as something that happens to 'difficult' clients - clients that they don't want. Of course with the rise of DDoS extortion/protection rackets, cheap booters usable by any disgruntled 14 year old with mommy's credit card, and scumbags throwing attacks at their competitors...

Want to have your server pwned? Easy: Run PHP

PHP is very far from perfect, but it's true that they're doing a lot better than they used to. But Facebook sucks as an argument because they had enough issues with PHP performance that they built their own runtime (first HipHop, then HHVM).

Want to have your server pwned? Easy: Run PHP

I guess you didn't read the article, click through to the original blog post that isn't covered in El Reg's "journalistic" jizz, or google how PHP version numbering works in your haste to have a "php suxxorz lol" jerk-off. With PHP versioning, like many projects, releases are numbered in the...

What a shock, running old, insecure versions of software leaves you insecure.

    Hostages Taken in Sydney

Terrorist attack? Seems more like a crazy guy with a gun who happens to be a radical religious nut, rather than any sort of organised terrorist attack - 13 people in a cafe is too small for that awful purpose. I'd put zero faith in The Australian's coverage; they're sensationalist shitheads...

EFF Certificate Authority - Free SSLs! - Lets Encrypt

The commercial vendors can offer a couple of things that a free cert can't: Those dumb little logos you can put on your site, that when clicked on give assurance that the site can be trusted and mention an impressively large sounding insurance policy that has never paid out in the history of...

List of providers who offer DDoS protection.

For the sake of completeness: AlienVPS has Awknet LA filtered IPs in their Las Vegas location Edit: apparently not any more, although it's still listed on their website Root Level's brands in LA (Semoweb, URPad etc.) have Black Lotus filtering on all their IPs. No idea what level of protection...

How to stop webhost frome entering vps without permission?

No. You have to ultimately trust your host. It's possible to make it more difficult (e.g. IIRC a modified /bin/bash could log/prevent vzctl enter) but with OpenVZ simfs your filesystem is literally a directory on the host node's filesystem, so they still have complete visibility of all your...

    Q3 2014 Lowend Provider Results

They don't get offer posts for each brand though, and the ultimate way to get people on LET to like you is to sell them something cheap (e.g. for how many top provider polls did Prometeus succeed by putting out their best offers immediately before or at the same time as the voting thread).

    Hard Drive Failure

I remember once being very puzzled as to why a floppy drive wouldn't work - the light just stayed on. Because I'd plugged the ribbon cable in upside down. If not for keyed plugs I don't think I could finish building a PC without committing murder these days.

    Hard Drive Failure

IMHO it's always a good idea to run regular SMART self tests - a full test after purchase, a conveyance test after any physical move (if the drive supports it), regular short self tests (maybe weekly) and occasional long self tests (maybe monthly). You can do it in a cron but smartd (likely part...

Paypal extends buyer dispute time limit to up to 180 days after purchase (in US)

I've had items from China and HK take longer than 45 days to show up in the past (delay in sending for a week, and then disappearing into a black hole within China Post only to reappear later, and that one time a DealExtreme package from HK to me in Australia got accidentally put on a plane to...

Does your VPS provider install patches in your container in stealth?

The default option should always be more secure rather than less secure. If people want to carefully manage the installation of updates on their server (and they absolutely should, but unmanaged services are often used by people who really need full management) they can remove the package easily.
