Lets Encrypt: Free SSL Certificates. How will other certificate authorities compete?

Looks interesting, but not entirely new.  The server side software is new though. StartSSL has been offering free SSL certificates for several years.  For most businesses, SSL isn't a big cost, and for large businesses I foresee EV, PCI, and auditing still being large ticket items for places...

SSD Hard Drives Going Read Only

Sure, used, but those SSDs and i7-3770 (equivalent to E3v2) aren't that old.  You don't rent dedicated servers expecting new equipment unless you arrange for it.   Just running that server in most datacenters would cost more than €29.70 (not including the cost of the hardware). Glad you got it...

SSD Hard Drives Going Read Only

In SMART, you want to look at the Wear Leveling Count.  I think Crucial's is pretty straight forward if I remember correctly. It would take a lot of writes to burn out a drive in 1.5 years, but it's definitely possible. That support response is pretty bad, but I guess it depends on what you're...

A Quick Guide to RAID Levels

Yes, that is a good start, but it is important to note it isn't always that simple.  Different technologies have different amounts of overhead.  For example, RAIDZ/Z2/Z3 with ZFS seems to have a good amount of overhead with advanced format drives. Striped arrays can also potentially have...

    Hack

After I originally posted, I saw that Hack also includes async support.  I haven't tested it yet, but that is a major change from PHP, I could see that as being very useful in the future assuming it works well (it looks like they just implemented it in 3.5). As some may know, PHP is a...

    Hack

Just downloaded PHPStorm EAP, still no Hack support, so that's a disappointment.  It looks like Facebook is releasing their own IDE soon named Nuclide. Guess I'll hold off on diving in until one of these is available.

    Hack

This appears to be part of Facebook's PHP enhancements with HHVM.  Looks interesting.  <goes to read some more> After going through the tutorial, I like some things and can definitely see them getting merged into PHP in the future.  The type enforcement features would ensure better code and the...

    New WebHostingTalk Site!

Holy hard on my eyes.  Have a headache tonight and WHT just turned it into a concussion.   Too much clutter, looks way disorganized.  Glad I'm not the only one who feels like it: http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1470726 The direction of WHT has been poor the last few years. ...

Iran now to be US' Less Nuclear Trading Partner

Yes, WMDs are a horrible invention.   Every country "needs" one, and none of those countries will be able actually use one.  It's all about fear and a sense of power. Fast neutron reactors or even Fusion (thinking far in the future) may be more applicable when it comes to energy, if they invest...

Iran now to be US' Less Nuclear Trading Partner

They do not have complete freedom.  They have restricted means under the treaty you pointed out and international pressure.  There are differences in quality when it comes to enriched uranium.  Highly enriched uranium (aka weapons grade) can also be used as a more efficient fuel or for different...

Iran now to be US' Less Nuclear Trading Partner

No, but I don't see a treaty signed in the height of the cold war and 47 years ago as relevant as what has happened lately.  Most of the people who signed that treaty are dead and many of the governments who signed that treaty are no longer in power.   That treaty may have also looked good back...

Iran now to be US' Less Nuclear Trading Partner

Iranian citizens have been able to buy web services for almost a year now if memory serves me.  They removed those sanctions to prevent censorship of citizens, but I believe it still sanctioned Iranian businesses up until now. While nuclear weapons will probably go down as one of the worst...

Best coding language to know in 2015?

Looks amazing.  The only problem is VISIBLE just doesn't seem LOL enough.

A Quick Guide to RAID Levels

I did provide a simple diagram of RAID10 and RAID5 in list form. I was trying to provide more explanation in this post in regards to the safety and redundancy of RAID.  Diagrams can be found all over google, but those diagrams sometimes fail to construe the risks associated with RAID levels...

[ovz] Error in ploop_fname_cmp during CT restore, f's with other CT's?

I don't see anything in the config.  You sure it is related to the start and not a separate notice?  I assume this is from your global log. P.S.  Did your system just crash?  Is that why you have the read only notice and cleanup with ext4?

Are the Newer OpenVz Kernels Swap-Happy?

It shouldn't ever swap out memory that is in use if you have free RAM on the system.   It should only be swapping out memory that has not been used recently (stale data). The only other reason would be if the host system is out of RAM.

Are the Newer OpenVz Kernels Swap-Happy?

Newer releases of OpenVZ have much different memory management than when vswap was first released, although not well documented at this time.  The implementation of cgroups is a big reason for the changes. I'm fairly certain OpenVZ accounts for actual swap usage by the container's processes...
