Monitors -- Features and What YOU Recommend

If I was to pick up any monitor I'd probably go and get the ASUS PQ321Q. That's the new 31.5" 4K monitor that costs $3,500. Pricey, and way past the perfect cost to performance ratio of the 2560x1440 monitors, but if money isn't an issue, why not?  A matte finish is a must, I also prefer it if...

What is size of your Monitor?

I picked up a 27" 2560x1440 Qnix monitor about a month ago. I have been loving the resolution bump. Before I had 3x 20" 1600x900 monitors. My current setup is a 27" 2560x1440 monitor in the middle, and two vertical 1440x900 20" monitors (one on either side of the big monitor.) The total...

What virtualization are you using? OpenVZ, Xen, or KVM?

I'm a customer that will almost always go with OpenVZ, but still has quite a few KVM machines for various things. I used to use Xen, but don't really use it much anymore.

Google: "Gmail users shouldn't expect email privacy"

This tutorial is a good one on how to copy your Gmail emails to another provider: http://www.twistermc.com/27915/move-gmail-to-gmail/

    Which OS will you support

I'd give $99 million to Debian since it has always been my favorite Linux distro. Then I would give the remaining $1 million out to ElementaryOS which seems like a good new distro from what I have seen so far.

Google: "Gmail users shouldn't expect email privacy"

Google's primary source of revenue is selling advertisements. It's not surprising that they aren't all that concerned about privacy.

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

I also experienced a couple of brief outages earlier this afternoon. They have a Twitter account where they announce network outages. It's protected, so I assume they only let customers follow the account. https://twitter.com/statuspacket

    Your motd screens

I have my MOTD show the provider, location, data center, system specifications, and price. I find SSHing into a VPS much easier than logging into a control panel and trying to find all of that information when I need to find it.

Why Mac is the best OS

For many years I used Windows as my main operating system. For a year or so I used Ubuntu as my main operating system. For the past year I have been using Mac OS X as my main operating system.  To be honest I liked Linux the best. It was incredibly flexible. One day I could be using GNOME, and...

    Falling off the Grid

I ran across this post today. It lists a topic like RSS reader, or photo gallery, and then some self hosted open source options.  https://wiki.debian.org/FreedomBox/LeavingTheCloud

Looking to get off the freemail train

Getting things setup is generally pretty easy. I found the most difficult part was getting the email to deliver properly (not being put in spam or rejected) with all of the main mail hosts like Gmail, Hotmail, and Yahoo.  Here's an article that helps solve that...

    Falling off the Grid

My upload speed at home isn't very great so having something that syncs performs a lot better than something that runs directly off of the server.

    Falling off the Grid

I have also never quite gotten ownCloud to work properly. Recently I have been using BitTorrent Sync with the combination of SFTP for my file syncing needs. It's not really an all in one solution, and BitTorrent Sync still has some issues, but it seems to work more reliably than ownCloud for me.

    Falling off the Grid

I spent a week with Zimbra and thought it was alright, but the web interface kind of sucked so I didn't stick with it.  I tried installing iRedMail at one point. RoundCube is really nice, but the free administration tools are very limited. The paid version might be a little more worthwhile.

    Falling off the Grid

I've been essentially doing the same sort of thing as you over the past few months. I have always disliked how all of the tracking works. When I heard that Google Reader was going away I switched to Tiny Tiny RSS and ever since I've been moving more and more things over to that same server. For...

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

I remember quite a few years ago buying my first SSD. It had 64GB of storage and cost me a good $200.  Intel does something similar on the desktop chips as well with the T suffixes. A lot of times colocation ends up being cheaper if you buy a whole rack from a provider.

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

I realized how powerful the E5420 is once I setup the dedicated server.  To be honest now that I've had the server for a while I don't mind the slower disk I/O. At this point I don't have enough players on the game servers for it to be a big issue. When I need a faster disk I'll probably get a...

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

I was also pretty surprised when I was getting the RAM errors on the machine startup. I don't think I've ever experienced any RAM failure in the past. The I/O performance difference is very minimal between the Western Digital and the Seagate drive (5-20MB/s depending on the test, in the real...

Quick Packet - Dual Intel Xeon L5420 - Dell CS24-SC - Dedicated Server Review

For the past year I have been ordering VPS's of various different sizes to run many different things including game servers, and websites. One comment that I see a lot is that if you have a lot of VPS's then you are probably better off getting a low end dedicated server. So naturally, I tried...
