vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

This is *exactly* what I'm saying. But much more succinct.  Also, Varnish is nice and all, but you'll likely end up not caching a lot for logged-in users, which makes it not quite as worthwhile as you'd want.

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

My worry is less about the front ends and more about the back ends. If you're hosting the SQL in one place like many have said, you can put as many DDoS protected servers up front as you want, the minute someone DDoSes your SQL server, it's toast. Same with any intermediary servers, etc.

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

The idea of the setup is good, sure, but large sites that do this generally have dedicated hardware and full-time people managing the setup and solving issues that arise.  CloudFlare might not be a magic pill, sure, but it's at least more battle-tested than most (all) of the LEB hosts around...

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

Yes, I have hosted a forum (lol), and yes, I have used Varnish (I was the one who linked to you sticky sessions, which I have successfully implemented, actually).  I've set up MySQL clusters before and watched network latency or downtime cause them to go haywire. What does your setup look...

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

You've gone from a six+ vps set up to "an extra KVM" - that's pretty much my point, it's a small site, there's no need for so much infrastructure. That's how you keep it cheap.  The idea would be to host somewhere slightly more expensive than BuyVM to avoid ending up somewhere like FiberHub...

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

My oh-so-not-subtle point was that you don't need redundancy, just get a server somewhere that's not a super-budget-lowend host that get's DDoSed all the time and is hosted in a facility held together by zipties (not literally, sorry FiberHub, but you need to work on that whole power thing), and...

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

You guys are talking about "sticky sessions" - http://mesmor.com/2012/02/15/varnish-client-director-with-sticky-session/ You're turning a ~300 active-user forum into a six-server setup. The only reason you're "saving" money is because you want people to give it to you for free. If you actually...

vpsBoard - Community input and feedback on our infrastructure and future

This is probably the most over-engineered setup possible for running an extremely simple, and relatively small, forum. You're changing something that would be as simple as  Request <-> Internet <-> (Server | Database) - Traditional, quick, easy.  to Request <-> Internet <-> Backend Server...

Google's New Malware Dashboard: Incero's on the Top 10

Yeah I'm surprised they don't just file a notification to admin@ or whatever the registered contact is - you'd think it would be in everyone's best interest. Despite their entire ASN not being scanned, as of now they are one of the top malware providers (by %) in the USA, according to Google...

Google's New Malware Dashboard: Incero's on the Top 10

I was checking out Google's new Malware Dashboard when I found this: Looks like someone needs to go through and do some cleaning!  Check the link earlier though, the malware dashboard is a pretty nice tool!

Just received this on Skype from Nick @ RamNode

I'm guessing it's this, I don't think Robert is quite that daft. Whoever it is really knows how to push everyone's buttons though, it's starting to get pretty damn annoying..

    FAPVPS 2GB KVM

The issue is that it's $20 per month for a VPS on four year old hardware in an extremely budget datacenter from someone who's liable to be a summerhost. I think that about covers it

Wholesaleinternet $19 per Month - Server Grab Bags.. more stock!

I've had a C2Q with a 1TB HD upgrade for a few months and it's been awesome! Currently it's getting decimated by the archive team while they try and save as much Google Reader data as possible, but I've done a good 4TB (http://ve.nvw.io/vnstat/) so far this month, it's been sweet!

$20/month for a chunk of an .. L5520, no SSD cache and a mediocre network? I dunno about this.

    RobertClarke/Server Crate back ?

He could have just said "lol i was jokin" and it all would have been put to rest. Thanks for contributing, though! HalfEatenPie even confirmed that even a testing or joking DDoS isn't really appropriate, just sticking up for something that I believe is quite unprofessional and malicious. ...

    RobertClarke/Server Crate back ?

I figured you weren't actually 16 ;). I actually need to get real work done, but since you keep taunting me! I didn't notice that link actually, that's very interesting - it looks like he tried to access rofl.php, but it 404ed on him because it wasn't actually there. You'd know this if you...

    RobertClarke/Server Crate back ?

I don't think anyone but you and I are in the conversation at this point, and I'm not even sure why I'm bothering to argue with a trolly 16 year old on the internet. I must be bored. I'll quote someone else I was pretty sure that you weren't *actually* going to do anything, but even joking...

    RobertClarke/Server Crate back ?

And now you're back tracking, sweet. I'm glad we all agree that it would be idiotic to DDoS someone, even if it was "testing" unless they gave you permission.

    RobertClarke/Server Crate back ?

Sending hundreds of thousands of packets per second of bandwidth with the intention of taking a server offline isn't okay. It's not the same as testing a harmless exploit that doesn't hamper the normal operations (unless, of course, you run commands that do - but then you're not testing an...
