    DD Script

Thanks for the instruction above.  I do see ioping results fluctuate wildly on VPS but I had always chalked that up to general noise from interleaved access by neighbours.  I guess it wasn't just that. When put through a time series though, it does have a relatively stable mean distribution...

    DD Script

Call me a noob here.  So the timing functions used ioping goes through vsyscall (I assume gettimeofday) on both ends of the heavier aio/block io calls.  Sure, the file system calls get hit with the context switch, but where does the inaccuracy come in?  Are we saying that it doesn't measure the...

It's the great equalizer.  They'll all be shitty servers thanks to this script :P

    DD Script

One other thing, if despite all recommendation to not release this you still decide to do so, then at the very least embed some randomize delay into the script.  The last thing anyone needs is a bunch of people running this script on a node on the hour, at exactly the same time.

    DD Script

I really can't recommend any sustained DD test.  If you're on a full virt like KVM or Xen, just read proc/diskstats.  On OpenVZ, the only thing I'd recommend is a 'single' ioping.  At regular intervals (much like what you're doing now with dd), it still paints a pretty good picture of any IO...

    Tips for an Upcoming Provider

    1. Is DDoS Protection important to you? Does it add value to the service you are buying from? As just an 'added' feature - no.  I find marketing bullet-point DDoS protection worthless as it can't seriously tank anything.  There's really only two providers so far that I'd trust to at least tank...

As a customer, would you purchase from a provider that doesn't offer Paypal balance payments?

But you can pass through a CC via paypal if your balance is zero. Chargebacks still work in that case, unfortunately.

    FreeNAS

Replying to my own question:  No, they still work. http://forums.freenas.org/index.php?threads/western-digital-green-drives-wdidle3-exe.18156/ IIRC, 5 mins was the max.  Some drives did not let you fully disable the head parking so that's the best you can do.

    Potential employer not mailing back

That's a good point. It's kind of odd to see someone experienced price themselves under market. College kids sure since they don't know better. But anyone with a few years experience should price higher than the average on initial request or at least be prepared to come up with a good...
