What do you use for monitoring the load?

How to configure my new server

Raid5 live on the edge! Well probably you dont want to, it wears the cells pretty badly. http://serverfault.com/questions/513909/what-are-the-main-points-to-avoid-raid5-with-ssd I would also be worried about all the drives failing at the same time, if they are all the same age and under the...

Interesting. Wasn't aware of that Puppet module.

    Self-hosted Distributed Storage

On LAN, I use GlusterFS. For storage of web data (heavy stat-less caching used on PHP to prevent overload) and other shared resources. Both for redundancy and general reliability (when compared with NFS). Also its in use purely for reliable shared access to configuration for configuration...

    Cloud Deployment

I know there is probably software out there for this, but does anyone have any recommendations for software to automate the deployment & destruction of cloud VPS's on demand. Preferably some script I can just call which creates the VPS via the DO api, and stores its details into a database...

BTSync - Bittorrent Sync file replication Mega Thread

Unfortunately I concur, we ended up syncing archives. Wasn't a big issue in the end since those archives became our packages and in the end it was cleaner for it. Plus permissions can be preserved :)

    @24/7/365 Yes

    Do you use Bitcoin?

@24/7/365 No one is truly anonymous. We take appropriate precautions for fraud. While there is less information available with BTC only transactions, we have enough information in our system to automatically detect alot of abuse. As of yet, we haven't had any issues from BTC only customers. We...

    Bash Remote Exploit (https://securityblog.redhat.com/2014/09/24/bash-specially-crafted-environment-v

@Aldryic C'boas Well said as always, I tend to agree. Personally I wouldn't have removed a harmless PoC, you cant wrap everything in bubble wrap. However I understand why @MartinD might want to remove it and his comment about posting in public makes me think he didn't see that it already is...

BTSync - Bittorrent Sync file replication Mega Thread

Large files - no problem. Its bittorent so its chunked. Constantly changing is problematic, seems to use timestamps to resolve conflicts. If time is out of sync at any node seems to cause major issues.

    Bash Remote Exploit (https://securityblog.redhat.com/2014/09/24/bash-specially-crafted-environment-v

I look forward to updating every server that runs bash... eh all of them. Fortunately this doesn't seem to exploitable under standard server scenario's without a service which allows for the setting of environment variables to specific values (rare) such as SSH access. Atleast based on my...

BTSync - Bittorrent Sync file replication Mega Thread

Install is simple. Server deployment in our case is done via shell script. Currently not using a repository. To install: Optional: Create user for btync to run as (or group and add your own user to it etc) Copy btsync to directory chmod +x btsync copy confifguration file in Add init.d...

    Do you use Bitcoin?

Hmm there is quite a few threads on Bitcoin here... Been accepting bitcoins with BitPay for around a year. Originally 100% AUD, then 50/50 and using BTC to pay bills. Currently thinking of going to 25/75 for a bit due to the amount of BTC/month received being pretty high :) No problems thus...

    Synchronised Home Directory / Workspace

@k0nsl Probably QQ's. Can the web UI be disabled with syncthing? Are the logs usefull though? CLI interface? Can the network address & ports be specifically bound?

    Synchronised Home Directory / Workspace

Still using btsync currently for package transfer between remote server. GlusterFS internally and in one case within the same country (Ramnode <-> DO AMS2) And rsync to keep some supporting utilities in sync (monitor scripts) I really want to play with s3fs but not prepared to leap into...

    Pattern Recognition & Clustering langauges

I've been hunting for a more suitable languages do do pattern mining & clustering work in for a while. Most likely such a language would be declarative and take care of alot of what I currently write myself in procedural land (backtracking etc). Currently using: PHP to interface with an...

    Clustering Systems

It all depends on what you are trying to achieve Data Processing? Theorem Proving? AI / NN? Data Clustering (Lingo3 / k-means etc) ? Pattern Mining? The list goes on..  Or even just a high performance web cluster (well it fits the definition)...

    Passwords and Storage!

Personally I would use 512-bit, currently 256-bit is believed to be sufficient. However if history is taught us something its that CPU power is always increasing. Even if we cant fathom it right now, its possible we just need the right technology to facilitate it. Using 512-bit keys costs you...
