cryptic short domain names, why so popular?

True: Cheap to pickup, but expensive to keep renewing. Squatters will steal the good ones if you're not vigilant.

MAID-SAFE (Massive Array of Internet Disks, etc.)

When I looked at it, Tahoe-LAFS (which is another "Internet file system" sort of thing) looked interesting. https://tahoe-lafs.org

MAID-SAFE (Massive Array of Internet Disks, etc.)

I'd never heard of this project, but apparently it's been around since 2006 and has raised millions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MaidSafe The technology sounds interesting, though once I read "MaidSafe Coins" I rolled my eyes...

Stephen Hawking on AI - "Could end the human race"

s/could/will/ Unless we destroy ourselves first.  The "old threats" like nuclear, biological, and chemical warfare are very easily controlled compared to the "new threats" of genetics, nanotechnology, and robots.  cf: http://archive.wired.com/wired/archive/8.04/joy.html

How's Your SSL Rate? Maybe Better Than Your Bank's

Neat tool:  https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/index.html   I was highly amused that an SSL I setup tonight rated A+.  Cheap PositiveSSL running on an nginx web server - nothing fancy.   Meanwhile...   Lloyd's: rated C.  https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/analyze.html?d=online.lloydsbank.co.uk...

    Raspberry Pi owners?

Meh - Linux is Linux so anything works.  Is there a separate Debian guide?   I've never used Arch but could certainly try it - it's not like I'm trying to run Linux on a Pogo out of any burning sense of practicality

    Raspberry Pi owners?

There were some hosting offers before...one I'm still aware of is this from @rds100 on LET: https://www.fitvps.com/members/cart.php?a=confproduct&i=0 $60/year for a Pi with a 32GB USB.  Not something I'd be interested in personally...for one thing, I'm wondering how much network traffic a Pi...

    The Cicret Bracelet

The video is fake but it's a, um, interesting concept...? The technology is not that impressive once you see how it's done (described in the vid), though as the comments point out, once you put your finger down you'd block a section of the "Screen" I think they're looking for someone to give...

What do you think about Docker?

My normally rather staid employer is suddenly going nuts about Docker.  Or at least the developers are. To me it seems like a slickified OpenVZ with one template to rule them all. In fact, I'm having a hard time seeing what it does that other container technologies don't do, except that...

    Raspberry Pi owners?

I have one of those and keep meaning to get around to root & play with it.  Do you have a link to a howto? I had an idea to make a portable ipod classic with my raspberry pi... http://www.raspberrypi.org/forums/viewtopic.php?f=35&t=91042 ...but I suspect battery life would be horrible. It's...

    Craigslist down, been hacked.

I love YT Cracker.  His new web site (just launched this month) is pretty cool, too - javascript implementation of the OS/2 desktop :-) http://www.ytcracker.com/v2014/

    Which nameservers do You use?

It would be funny if we setup our own .vpsboard underground TLD.

    Which nameservers do You use?

Level3's IPs are also easy to remember: 4.2.2.2.  It's actually through 4.2.2.1 through 4.2.2.6. For years I've used Level3 and Google in my VPS's resolv.conf.

EFF Certificate Authority - Free SSLs! - Lets Encrypt

Even a "normal" cert with an optional donation. Yes, I'd pay $5 or $10 to get my SSL from EFF as opposed to a commercial vendor.

What is your favourite linux-based operating system?

If I have a choice at all, I don't use Linux and prefer OpenBSD. Why?  Well since you asked: man pages are complete and accurate and they treat mistakes in them like serious bugs.  This alone is worth using OpenBSD. also, man pages are man pages not stubs that point you at texinfo and blah...
