What's the difference between DigitalOcean and other VPS companies?

I've never bought from DigitalOcean - plenty of good budget and premium VPS companies, as well as good cloud companies (AWS, Azure, etc.) I looked at them today...so other than you can choose to pay by the month or by the hour, what's the difference between DO and any other VPS company?

Chris Fabozzi from ChicagoVPS can you reply to YOUR tickets?

There's something special about a guy who makes a third grade grammar mistake while calling someone else an idiot.

Chris Fabozzi from ChicagoVPS can you reply to YOUR tickets?

Uh, dude, Chris already said ChicagoVPS is going to be closing, though he refuses to say when. Hope you didn't sign up for one of those three-year promotions...

    Looking for OpenBSD/FreeBSD VPS

I've run OpenBSD on a number of different provider's KVM - BuyVM and Hostigation specifically and I think others.  Really, any KVM host should support this easily.

    I need a new project/venture

The discussion about recreating Gatsby/hosted Ghost got my project energies flowing.  I've been thinking about what sort of ventures I might start. A lot of the immediate ideas are long since taken... - The world probably doesn't need another monitoring service, given that there are good free...

Monitoring (both inside/outside) - What Do You Use?

I asked about this some time ago, but the landscape changes so fast.   What do you use for monitoring, where monitoring is both:   1. from the outside - such as ping, checking http, etc.  There are a million products and external services (I like NodePing) that do this. 2. from the inside -...

    Swapping to /dev/null - normal?

    # swapon -s Filename                                Type            Size    Used    Priority /dev/null                               partition       131072  0       -1 :P   So in fairness...this is a Virtuozzo VPS from WiredTree.  They promise X MB of RAM and deliver it.  I've been very...

MySQL or Pg in the cloud (as a service)?

Actually, now that you mention it...in case anyone's interested, though a couple years old: http://www.slideshare.net/mysqlops/facebook-architecture

MySQL or Pg in the cloud (as a service)?

Well, it can be - I heard a presentation from a Facebook engineer and they use MySQL very heavily, though it's hardly stock. Ultimately I took the easy way out...realized I'd never actually signed up for AWS Free Tier so I that's a year of a Micro instance, which should be more than sufficient...

MySQL or Pg in the cloud (as a service)?

I need a database in the cloud.  I have various VPSes and I'd like to coordinate the jobs they run, so I thought I'd have each write to a central DB.  I'd also like to store config, capacity planning, etc. data there.  Small stuff - probably less than 500M for a long time.   MySQL (or Maria)...

I Have a Business Idea for a New Type of VPS...But No Cash.

Yes, I said "Ideas by themselves are worthless..."  :) So...how about ramdisk-based VPSes?   - Buy a server with a ton of memory - say 256GB, 512GB, or 1024GB.  We have Windows servers at work with 1TB RAM - don't remember which model.  I googled and on some random VAR's order builder a...

I Have a Business Idea for a New Type of VPS...But No Cash.

I had an idea for a new kind of VPS business...something I'd never seen before, and I haven't been able to find anyone offering it via Google.  I don't run a VPS business now - I do some shared hosting but not VPS. Unfortunately, it would take probably ~$15,000 to start (minimum - could...

How do providers manage their hardware?

Some things I've always wondered about with providers and how they run their operations.   My background is big IT - my employers have typically owned their own DCs, have local sysadmins in each site, big support contracts, etc.  So I've done a lot of datacenter-oriented work, just not with...

    Free Hosted Ghost

I've actually thought of doing free panel-less hosting. Kind of a "smart guys' hosting". Maybe a small custom panel for dns & mysql db create, but otherwise just ftp/jailed ssh. But there are so many free hosts out there already... Speaking of smart guy hosting : NoSupportLinuxHosting.com...

    Free Hosted Ghost

Such a strange project, Ghost is... "We want to be just blogging...because blogs are important".  But they're building on a platform that requires dedicated, unsharable resources which means it'll be limited to (a) technophiles who run their own VPSes, or (b) richer people who can afford...

    Free Hosted Ghost

I think this would likely be the only way - to scale within one node.js instance. Of course, this means keeping modifications in sync with upstream (or convincing them to adopt...my sense is that they want to get to 1.0 without another new idea).  Also plugin compatibility. It also changes...
